Help review my resume!

I'm looking for resume help before FT recruiting and would appreciate advice.

A few things i'm wondering about:

Should i add some less relevant classes to my coursework, (labor econ, calc2, lin alg, discrete math, operations, marketing)?

Should I add Dean's List? It's my only honor. It seems like a waste of a whole line

Should I keep UBS? Could show more dedication to finance, 5 internships>4 internships?

What should I cut out or reword?

Thank you in advance.

Good resume, I would align the headers to the left (people read left to right). You also missed a space after the ":" in Major GPA.

I have a pretty similar resume to yours. I ended up making my wealth mgmt experience 1 bullet and expanded upon my internship experience. (If you needed another line for info). You could do the same for the chess club, although you were the founder so not sure if you'd want to do that.

Good resume. Add deans list and any other honors - no harm if you feel like it's a waste of space then that's fine as well. Adding UBS shows that your serious about finance and is a good transition to how you really show and tell recruiters in ur story why u wan ib/hf. Don't add irrelevant coursework.

How do you not already have a FT offer?

Impressive resume, I'm assuming you go to a college in a major city (NYC, Boston, Chicago, L.A. Dallas). Otherwise it would be impossible to hold so many different positions.

Anyways, is there anyway you can show results. Did you work on any completed transactions?

Other than that I think you are golden. Unless, you got a prick looking at your resume you should at the very least get an interview if not an offer. Considering the various positions, I'm assuming you know how to hold an interview.

If you're at a non-target they'll toss it anyway... You're golden if you're going through some recruiting process.

The world does have a lot of pricks in them. It might be more concentrated in finance.

Sounds like he goes to NYU to me.

Very strong resume, along with GPA. Have you gotten any interviews yet?

Also, where are you looking to apply to? I know you have a heavy IBD/Corp Fin background, but anything specific?

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the feedback. Great catch on the missed space btw. Are there any bullets that seem poorly worded or particularly weak that you notice? I'll try to recall some more results oriented work i've done and maybe I can substitute something in.

That is some resume you've got there. The only sentences I felt that perhaps didn't sound right were the ones in your spring analyst bullet points. "$300mm capital raise..." and "$200mm capital raise" - I think that should be 'raised', in past tense. Unless you mean that it increased, in which case it should be 'rise'?

Anyway great resume, all the best.

Wow. I'm a rising sophomore and i literally just favorited your link so that I have something to work towards internship-wise by the time in looking for FT offers. I would keep UBS personally. maybe be more specific if possible

Good luck! I didn't start getting into finance till fall of my sophomore year when I took the PWM internship only cuz it would complement my econ major. From then on i just kept trying to get better and better internship. It's sorta cool to work your way up from unpaid pwm to more exciting stuff.

The only advice I have is just to keep your eyes open for opportunities. College has so much to offer, whether it's competitions, clubs, events, internships, so there's always something worth doing. Good luck

  • Comma in education (Expected May, 2013) is inconsistent with the rest of the bullet points
  • Risk analyst intern: delete comma after dispersion; risk adjusted alpha? are you sure you know what alpha means?; should be long/short; delete comma after region
  • Spring analyst, investment banking: "Set up and managed the virtual...", you should consider rewriting this, a couple of 100's on a $300m deal is not even a rounding error, highlighting attention to detail in the way that you do sounds strange
  • Interests: delete comma after soccer

Otherwise strong resume, would invite you for interview

So far no interviews, but I haven't started applying either. I wanted to try to get my resume right before I sent it out. I'm pretty open to any job and will consider the opportunities as they come along, although I probably value work/life balance a bit more than other people on this forum. I wouldn't mind going the corporate route either and I have a business idea i would like to try, so any free time will just go to getting that business off the ground. So nothing is off the table for me yet, especially since I don't have any offers.

Excellent. I was wondering about the "risk adjusted alpha" part but i wanted to highlight it wasn't just "outperformance" of a benchmark which sometimes people use as a proxy for alpha, assuming beta is 1. I will update based on your suggestions, thank you for the close look. I appreciate it.

Solid resume. Just a few minor things set off the grammar nazi in me (no ";" after the math minor, for example). Other than that, you're doing extremely well. Congrats!

WSO Resume Review Score*: 14 (out of 15 possible)

  1. Wording/Bullets: 4.5
  2. Layout/Format: 4.5
  3. Overall: 5
  • Note: This score is based on a subjective assessment of three different criteria all on a 1 to 5 scale (1 = poor, 2 = below avg, 3 = average, 4 = very good, 5 = excellent) based on my own experience reviewing thousands of resumes in the past and based on the current state of the posted resume.

Some explanation of the grading:

1, Wording/Bullets: This score represents the overall wording of the bullets and content throughout the resume. Are there action words? are the experiences explained clearly? Does the candidate quantify their impact where possible?

  1. Layout/Format: This score represents to overall layout and format. Finance professionals are notorious for being anal. Although this score is somewhat subjective, there are certain things we look for including consistency, spacing, clean look, clear sections, proper order, etc.

  2. Overall: This score represents the experiences and school of the candidate and is the hardest to change in the short term. Improving the Wording/Bullets and Layout/Format scores can bump this grade up (usually by 1 grade at most), however, this grade depends largely on the School, GPA, Internships, Leadership, Extracurriculars of the applicant, etc.

We are going to try to provide a candid / direct grading system for as many resumes as we can in this Public Resume Review forum, with the hopes that it will lead candidates that need help on #1. and #2 criteria to consider the WSO Resume Review service that has experienced professionals ready to help bring the #1 and #2 score as close to a 4 or 5 as possible. Due to time contraints, I can't provide more detail and I can only provide this grade to each candidate once (if you try to repost and updated version under a different username, i will recognize it and ignore). What I will say is that if you aren't at a 4 or 5 in Wording and Layout, we can probably help you make significant improvments.

Some more guidelines for total overall score:

3 - 6: Needs MAJOR help / improvements in several areas 7 - 8: Has some major flaws but also has some good areas 9 - 11: An average to slightly above average resume that could still use some help but it is on "ok" shape 12 - 13: A competitive resume that should be able to land some competitive interviews 14 - 15: An impressive resume on all or almost all levels. Wording/Bullets/Layout/format and overall experience, grades, school, etc are all excellent or very good.

We suggest if you score in the bottom 3 categories listed above that you strongly consider the WSO Resume Review service. Whatever you decide, best of luck!

Thanks, Patrick
