HF Comp & long-term question

1) If you join a medium to large L/S hedge fund as a research analyst & you end up doing well, what is earnings potential 2yrs & 5 yrs out?

2) Also, in case things don't work out/fund underperforms, etc, what are the attractive exit options for a L/S guy besides another L/S fund?

3) Lastly, do you think there's any value in getting some macro exposure (macro fund exposure / rates or EM trading) before jumping back into L/S (knowing that lots of value investors don't really care about markets)? Would this make you more marketable going forward because you understand everything better or less because you've spread yourself too thin?

Thanks!
