Uhh, what? Research at HF (e.g. research analyst, jr analyst, 'investment" analyst), usually is an "investing" role.
There are some positions out there where you support an analyst but don't cover positions/make the direct investing decisions.
You've just described the majority of HF positions. Most funds will have several research analysts supporting a portfolio manager who actually pulls the trigger. Also not all analysts become PMs, though this is not necessarily a bad thing.
There are plenty of career analysts out there who have zero aspirations of becoming a PM.
I think OP wants to know when the fund manager will give him a bln $ to play with.
Sorry for the confusion guys, but I'm specifically talking about a role where you'd basically be supporting the analysts who support the PM... and where one day if you're good enough, you'd become one of the analysts supporting the PM.
