Hiring freeze - what to expect?

Top 20 asset management firms (think Wellington/Invesco/T.Rowe Price), emerging market analyst position.

Passed all interviews, HR followed up, emailed to proceed with the offer, I sent current package materials back, one month later I was told they have to freeze the headcount.

I understand the market is quite volatile recently, but what should I expect? Does hiring freeze mean dead end and I should look for other positions?

Is this related to the Invesco/OppenheimerFunds deal? I listened to the Invesco analyst call last week, and one of the justifications for the deal was a ton of cost savings through "synergies" (read: system consolidations and layoffs) For most positions, I would tell you to go elsewhere, but as an EM analyst you might have a shot. Some of those active EM teams are very high powered, and if the PM makes a stink, I think they may make an exception.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

How'd you like the "response" to Marty's answer to the first question? LOL
