Hiring market for people coming out of PE

I am looking to transition out of private equity and into a L/S equity hedge fund role at a single manager shop. I have gotten relatively negative feedback from people within the industry and even from head hunters about the hiring market. It seems that the value oriented fundamental shops had a tough 2018 and that dried up the hiring considerably. Is this going to change within the next year? What are people's thoughts?
