History major with finance experience and recruiting
Hello,
I am a history major at Queen's University in Ontario with finance experience under my belt. Previously I worked at RBC Dominion Securities as a Capital Markets and Macroeconomics Research Analyst, I have an offer for equity research this summer form a PE firm in Toronto, and am waiting to hear back from an IB. I am only in second year and am a part of a club with a strong network to big banks. Will my major hinder me in any way to break into IB, even with the experience I have? I also plan to do equity research unpaid during the rest of my time at university during the academic year.
Thank you
honestly with that experience i dont think it will
I have a sibling that goes to Queens Smith School of Business. It seems like in Canada Ivey and Smith are the target programs for banking, but it will be difficult for you to access the same OCR opportunities as a non-Commerce student. I went to an Ivy and majored in Poli Sci with relevant finance experience and got BB offers, but I think that’s more so bc the brand equity of a school overweighs major/field of study here. I don’t think it’s the same way in Canada and I unfortunately see many of my very smart friends studying finance at schools like UBC having a difficult time breaking into top Canadian banks.
Thanks for the input. Do you know much about the deferred MBA programs in America, I am thinking of applying. Thank you.
