Hot (obvious) take: Elon Musk does dumb shit on purpose
He smoked weed on JRE on purpose to get attention, they broke the glass on purpose to get attention.
Elon Musk is too smart to know the consequences that come from either of these (he knew going in that he was going to smoke weed). He knows these will lead to memes, and memes are by far the best way to spread information and get attention.
He will willing to take a short term gut punch for long term tesla growth
Prove me wrong.
i wouldnt have known about the cybertruck yet if it werent for the windows breaking, so you could be right
While I personally have no issue with Musk smoking a joint, I've read its strained Tesla's relationship with Panasonic (Japanese are very anti-marijuana) and threatened SpaceX' federal contracts (Federal anti-drug laws). It was a stupid move with no gain. While drug laws are softening against marijuana in the US, openly smoking weed like he did can get him banned from visiting certain countries for flouting drug laws. Not a good look for Musk or his companies if he can't visit clients abroad because he smoked on JR's show.
As for the Cybertruck incident, it may have actually been premeditated, and I doubt anybody gives a damn about having bulletproof armor glass windows. The potential Cybertruck buyers in south-side Chicago might be a little disappointed, but the majority of buyers will probably get as much mud and dirt on their tesla truck as they do on their luxury sports car.
As a potential Cybertruck buyer here on the South Side of Chicago - uhh, no comment. :)
Forgot to include rich african warlords
The whole Marijuana illegality situation is complete bullshit, especially considering just how dangerous Alcohol (ethanol) is in general. Alcohol is an actual gateway drug, and yet no one suggests banning it because prohibition didn't work. The DEA just cares to justify their jobs, and illicit drugs would be much safer if it were legal for good companies to manufacturer the stuff.
I still think it's funny how so many people freak out over it.
Y'all playing chess, Elon " smoked a blunt but didn't inhale" Musk is playing checkers.
Funding is still secured.
You're not wrong
I've heard this theory, that it was all guerrilla marketing tactic. I don't really think so. Elon seemed genuinely shocked, if you watch the video, and his stuttering seemed candid. If it was on purpose, then he's a really good actor.
5/7, will definitely buy this version. Better than paying through the roof for a bed in NYC/SF/LA (no pun intended).
I don't doubt this theory. I think a lot of people that seem to do dumb shit, do it to get attention or with a specific goal in mind. In the UK there's this conspiracy theory that when Boris Johnson was asked about his hobbies he gave the [cringiest answer] (
) answer about liking to make and paint model red buses. Innocent enough right? Yet there have been claims it was done (semi) intentionally to draw attention to the red bus message of the NHS used during the Brexit campaign. "Idiotic moves" are at times smarter than we think.
Actually, it's said to have been done for the exact opposite reason - to draw attention from the NHS bus message used in the Brexit campaign. Before the video, if you were to google "Boris Johnson bus" you'd get him standing if front of the NHS bus; now you google the same and you get the answer to his hobbies, which comes in handy given how big of a lie was written on that bus. Boris here playing chess with the media
It was a tactic to update Google searches from the NHS lie to this ridiculous story.
Sort of like how Walt Disney's head is Frozen (or brain idk or care) and they also came out with Frozen the movie so now when you google Walt Disney Frozen you find a cute story and not learn how the creator of the company being some lunatic. That's what some believe anyways...
Jeff is right.
agree it's possible about the tesla truck, not so such much the weed smoking
I agree, when he said he was going to take Tesla private, didn’t he desperately go around looking for buyers that weekend?
Nah, he might've got some amount of speculative interest from the Saudi family prior to that announcement. What Musk didn't account for, and what many of us know, is that most of the time, the Saudis are looking for hype and talk utter shit, as long as it floats. It was pretty clear who the buyer was, and it was pretty clear that they only had half-hearted interest in buying Tesla (along with a bunch of other companies via that utter cesspool called the "Vision Fund" lol).
Nah, I just think there isn't much time in his day to think about everything he says or does carefully... sometimes shit happens in demos and I don't think it's a big deal.
Gotta say, that CyberTruck design is ....different.
Elon Musk is many things - a pompous salesman, an overpromiser, a spaced-out dude. But he also certainly is one of the smartest people on the planet, sorrounded by an equally brilliant team. I believe he has a plan, and the Cybertruck is just a very small step in it. He has accomplished incredible things in the last 10 years, things no one thought possible. Give him 30 more years and the haters will have eaten their scorn a hundred times over.
Guerilla marketing is great until it backfires and Musk gets burned. I think he's not daft enough to really mess up big time. Only time will tell
you now understand elonology
Sometimes random things happen. Everything in life isn't an orchestrated calculated game
Sometimes you otta be a little crazy and eccentric to make it big. Elon isn't afraid to go against the current and it's quite endearing. He could've made a truck look like a truck, but he said fuck it - Cybertruck, which I initially thought looked like shit, just like pretty much everyone else. But the more I look at it, the more I dig it. It looks like it came from the future. That thing makes a statement - like Hummers back in the 00's. Not another F150, Chevy, or GMC.
Musk has mostly cleaned up his behavior in 2019. Maybe his weird antics were on purpose, but he's clearly made a concerted effort to act "normal" in recent months.
I think he just does not want Wall Street to be tempted to short his stock, notice David Einhorn(notable shortseller) has a huge beef with him and a very similar take as you.
David Einhorn is like Wall Street's loser though. Just because he made a few successful bets in the past does not mean that he's a leading authority.
idk.... predicting the fall of lehman brothers as well as being named the 44th most influential person in the world in 2013 by Time seems like a big deal to me...I do not think it is rational to call a person like David a "loser" otherwise dudes like you and I must be really big losers.
made an atv for fun*
Could it be for an obvious reason?
I wouldn't say all his actions are planned. He is one of those people that have "larger than life" attitude and believe that normal rules don't apply to them. This type of behavior does attract rebels like him to his cause though, so while he is not necessarily planning every step, he is probably consciously building his brand.
This is like the theory that Trump is playing "three-dimensional chess". To me the proof is in the pudding, his antics have gotten him in serious trouble, if this was on purpose I don't see why.
My theory? People like attention. Being a good promoter, charismatic speaker or genius of product design doesn't mean you're emotionally intelligent and good at acting with restraint. Smarter people have done dumber shit for likes.
