Hours at MM?

Hi All,

While I realize this question has been asked before, I have not come across a clear range/median for the hours worked at your typical large MM (Citadel, Balyasny, P72, etc.).

Realize it will depend on team / PM, but would appreciate any further input. Far from expecting a 9-5, but at the same time hopefully not as bad as IB (albeit a different intensity).

Really depends on team. It can be insane hours or not too far from 9-5. Really depends on team culture/seniority/value add etc.

Mileage certainly varies with the main variables being seniority, asset class, holding period (i.e. how much tactical trading), involvement in execution, and team culture.

My experience in the Macro space is that 7am-4:30pm is around normal (with hours potentially shifted up or down by an hour so).

edit: I would be remiss to not mention that it is not the hours at one of these shops that will get to ya - it is the round the clock P+L stress that weighs much more heavily (some can handle it, some cannot).

Agree with this answer.  I work +/- 7-430 M-T and then 7 (maybe 8 if out night before)-3 or 4 on Fridays.  With work from home, if I'm awake before my alarm, I'll often find myself logging on much earlier than 7 though.  Plenty of reading/thinking/stressing at night and on weekends.    Very hard to truly take a vacation unless you work with a Partner.

Bump.... any more updated views? have heard from some TMT teams that hours more in the 7-8/9 range outside of earnings and can get a lot worse during earnings... how bad is it actually?

It all depends on the team.

If I was to come up with a median observed at my fund (one of P72/Citadel/Millennium/Balyas) I'd say 7am-6pm; with some voluntary evening reading and generally no weekend work.
