Housing Dilemma (for Networking and Transportation) -- NYC vs. CT

I am a rising junior, and my summer corp dev internship is in CT, right across the NY-CT border. Should I live in Manhattan (near NYU) and commute to CT daily, or should I live in CT?

Housing should be about equal in both NYC and CT (~$1400/month but CT might be ~$200 cheaper), but transportation would be a lot more if I'm commuting from NYC (~$350/month).

Where should I live? I'm leaning more towards NYC because more things to do, and I would also be able to network more effectively for junior recruiting I think. Is it worth the transportation cost and time?

Speaking from experience from commuting as an intern... Definitely would go closer to work. You spend more of your time there and a good morning commute can set the tone for your day. Unless you consider you may be productive on your commute from NYC to CT, I would live closer to work, especially when its cheaper!

I've commuted for my internship last year between Berkeley and North Bay (of the SF Bay Area). It was a little less than 2 hours on a good day, and this year, my commute would be less than that.

Would I be missing out on the NYC lifestyle if I stayed in CT? Would I be missing out on potential networking opportunities by not having direct access to the city?

No way--I don't know what your hours look like but if you're pulling intern hours along with ~3 hours commuting a day, you won't have a lot of time for NYC lifestyle (happy hour events, etc.) on the weekdays as is. Take advantage of the money you save and live it up on the weekends in NYC. In terms of networking events, you have a point but "having direct access to the city" isn't necessary. You'll have to commute to something regardless and I would rather commute to the thing I have to do less often (networking).
