Housing Dilemma (for Networking and Transportation) -- NYC vs. CT
I am a rising junior, and my summer corp dev internship is in CT, right across the NY-CT border. Should I live in Manhattan (near NYU) and commute to CT daily, or should I live in CT?
Housing should be about equal in both NYC and CT (~$1400/month but CT might be ~$200 cheaper), but transportation would be a lot more if I'm commuting from NYC (~$350/month).
Where should I live? I'm leaning more towards NYC because more things to do, and I would also be able to network more effectively for junior recruiting I think. Is it worth the transportation cost and time?
Bump!
Why not somewhere in between?
Speaking from experience from commuting as an intern... Definitely would go closer to work. You spend more of your time there and a good morning commute can set the tone for your day. Unless you consider you may be productive on your commute from NYC to CT, I would live closer to work, especially when its cheaper!
I've commuted for my internship last year between Berkeley and North Bay (of the SF Bay Area). It was a little less than 2 hours on a good day, and this year, my commute would be less than that.
Would I be missing out on the NYC lifestyle if I stayed in CT? Would I be missing out on potential networking opportunities by not having direct access to the city?
Why would you commute for 2 hours from Berkeley? That sounds terrible.
No way--I don't know what your hours look like but if you're pulling intern hours along with ~3 hours commuting a day, you won't have a lot of time for NYC lifestyle (happy hour events, etc.) on the weekdays as is. Take advantage of the money you save and live it up on the weekends in NYC. In terms of networking events, you have a point but "having direct access to the city" isn't necessary. You'll have to commute to something regardless and I would rather commute to the thing I have to do less often (networking).
Housing is definitely cheaper in CT. Wherever you're looking I would suggest to price check more thoroughly. The commute from NY is tiring, and I know because I did it everyday last summer. Definitely try to house in CT, you'll save money and time - a "win-win" in my book.
I live in CT and commute to NY, it's doable. PM me with (or post) details and I can provide more specific guidance.
Is your internship near a train station (walkable)? If no, live in CT. If yes, live in NYC near the train. You'll be bored out of your mind living in CT.
Ultimately decided living in NYC and commuting to CT. It a couple hundred dollars more expensive per month overall, but I think it's definitely worth it. Thanks guys!
I know I'm late to this but if you're interning and want to make a strong impression, pick CT. I reverse commute now from NYC but there was no way I could have scaled the learning curve of my first year if I had been doing that.
