How can I land a REPE Associate title with Tech IB experience?

I graduated from a non-target school in May 2018 and I"m almost done with my first year in a Tech IB group at a large Canadian bank in NYC (think largest Canadian). I'm not interested in tech and I want to move into REPE on an acquistions team, but I'd rather not go the route of making a lateral move to REIB at a different shop and then jumping to PE if I don't have. I'm interested in middle market shops mostly.

Has anyone had a similar background to mine and was able to successfully land an associate role at a REPE fund doing acquisitions? If so, do you mind sharing your story and some advice on how i might be able to do the same? Do you think it's possible for me to make the move from Tech IB or should my first move be a lateral to an REIB group at another bank?

Thanks friends.
