How can people consciously accept a salaried job?
Assuming it's a non-remote job with lengthy hours, what you're saying when you accept a job that pays 50k, 100k, 150k, 200k, 300k, etc, is acknowledging that "this is how much my time is worth to me."
and if your time is your existence,
and if your existence is your life.
(and 1 life is all you (will ever) have)
well, you make your own logical conclusion.
it's quite profound and deeply troubling.
One must eat to live and many people use a salary to buy food. It's quite remarkable.

so what do you say to the (idiots) here who say minimum wage earners are NOT slaves? (assuming they agree that food is necessary for survival.)
For what it's worth, I'm a fiscal conservative, fiercely supportive of capitalism, and believe slaves are necessary for capital asset (stock, real estate, etc) appreciation.
but let's be frank and call a spade a spade. (and not a slave an "employee")
I thought you were just an idiot. Who knew!
Slaves do not have options, employees do. Slaves can't quit, look for employment elsewhere, or expect that putting in more effort will lead to better results. Employees hold power over their destinies. Needing to eat and choosing to fill that need by working and buying food from others instead of living off the land does not bring you anywhere remotely close to being a slave.
Slavery still exists in a lot of the world. Read a book before boring us with your elementary wannabe philosophical thoughts.
Needing to eat doesn't make you a slave to anyone. Maybe to nature. Which is why nature takes precedence over economics when it comes to the essence of the employee. We're all just taking a small bit of personal responsibility to make our natural order move more cohesively.
How is this related to a salaried job? If you have an hourly wage job, you're still putting a price on your time. Even if you are an entrepreneur selling a product, you are still putting a price on your time (via your product). If you do any action - such as seeing a movie - you are implicitly saying that this event is worth X amount of your life. Not all time spent can be equally valuable, and that is just a fact of life.
Your premise also assumes your life is the most important thing going on. News flash: you are not important to the universe. Some of us have other people we are working for, but even they are only locally important (to their family members and friends). Nobody is important over a long enough time horizon. Accept that and move on and you will unlock the reason why people do things they don't want to do (which seems at the crux of your question).
Life is not the most important thing going on. It's the ONLY thing going on.
I agree that we're absolutely insignificant in the cosmos. No one will remember us in 100 years.
In that case, shouldn't that make the time you ARE alive (i.e. living life) even more precious?
You are indirectly supporting my premise.
I'll bite. What actions do you propose are worth making the time you are alive more precious - and why?
No, it's not quite profound.
Dude reading your posts is like peeking inside my 18-year-old mind pretty much verbatim. Do you robotrip a lot and have a rad porn collection on an external hard drive too?

"you thinking what I'm thinking.."
"aim for the bushes"
"apartment pop"
People need stability. I mean a very small amount of people on this forum aren't trust fund babies like you. Weren't you crying about ur parents not getting u a nice car or something.

This is why you work in tech - far more remote opportunities. My brother makes 250k a year working as engineer; he can work anywhere in the world and can work in any of the company’s global offices. Furthermore, the work is pretty simple, I spent a few weeks with him this summer and he never did more than 2 hours of work per day.
Similarly, some of my friends got 120-150k offers (full remote), for a variety of startups, porn sites, or contract work. The opportunities are endless, but having a few years of office experience at a big name will greatly increase your chances of getting a high paying remote gig
Forget trying to tell the people here that wage slavery isn't a pathetic way to spend your life. They have devoted so much time and effort to it they can't simply admit they were wrong.
I'm with you. I would gladly take a remote job that paid 40K and live in Thailand or even just some rural part of the US and enjoy my freaking life and free time over a 200k job working 70+ hours in NYC where you're still barely middle class. Corporate drones cannot be reasoned with.
There's no "wrong" way to live your life. MM - the trust fund kid - is the one who attacked 99.9% of human livelihoods. I've lived abroad in Asia and the sketchy 45 year olds still making $40k and trolling the red light district are "free" but are they? The "corporate drones, mannnn" argument is great if you have no ambition and no family to support. I would say the many people I met abroad with that mindset mostly had it because they were mentally justifying their failure on the traditional career paths - it wasn't like a conscious choice and they turned down Harvard and GS to go teach SCUBA. Anyway, you do you.
Yep, everyone who doesn't work in an office sucking their MD's cock is a loser. You're so right. Nice hypocrisy from your opening statement as well. You must be really smart.
Yeah, a lot of the older foreign dudes living in Asia are straight creepy. If you have a normal management job there I can see the appeal, but those guys who just hit up Red Light Districts have nothing going for them.
Because guaranteed $$ is great.
Every time people respond to this kid's posts in a serious manner I'm amazed.
Hold up, you're saying this isn't your alt account meant to tie up TNA's SBs?
like @GoldenCinderblock said, a lot of us went through these phases at some point. If it helps MM or some future lurker, I'd say it's worth the 90 seconds it takes to respond seriousl.
OP, we get it buddy. You are wealthy or an entrepreneur or something and think you are better than most of society. Cool.
For what it's worth, homeless people also share my sentiment. They would rather suffer in freedom than "prosper" (euphemistically) in captivity.
So yea, pretend I'm the homeless guy with a paper cup on the street corner, if that calms your ego.
Most people are risk adverse by nature. Nothing wrong that I suppose as it makes the benefit of not being risk adverse much much larger.
