That might be considered well at state schools, if you want to work on wall street (wall street only takes ivy grads, but PwC takes state school kids), consider JPress or the Andover Shop.

Wall Street only takes Ivy grads? That's fucking news to me.

go in your closet grab dark blue jeans and then grab your whitest mfing socks you have like blood of the lamb white as snow fkin socks then grab your sandles (not flipy fopies) and stand in a mirror

you will never have looked so bad ass in your life

You can't.

I had one friends who dressed nice (although eccentrically), every day. I mean he would wear a blazer with these ridiculous pants. It is a collegial style and he certainly was notorious on campus (people often referred to him as Rick Asley since he looked and dressed like RA).

For the most part, nice clothes don't fit well on a college campus. Campus parties and bars are not really the place to wear a nice sport shirt or polo, let alone a blazer and dress shoes.

Get some good jeans, a good mix of tshirts (some with words/graphics, others just plain), maybe a few pairs of shorts. These are perfect for class. For going out, most guys will either wear what they wear to class, or upgrade a tshirt for a polo or sport shirt. Honestly, unless you are eccentric like my friend, most people will think you are a tool if you are wearing a blazer and dress shoes out to a bar or party

looking for that pick-me-up to power through an all-nighter?

At top universities people always dress nice. Think polo, brooks brothers, vineyard vines, sperry etc. Dark jeans with a polo or buttonup shirt and some sperrys is a super standard outfit. Driving moccasins also are good. Khaki shorts when its warmer. Anything with pastel colors.

the above is true for Harvard, but most people go to state schools, at state schools, the access to brooks brothers, vineyard vines is limited so they wear continue to wear what they wore in middle school like American Eagle and AnF. Some state school people even bring this culture to Ernst & Young or PwC

For some reason, people still screw this up and look like shit even when they wear expensive clothes. Fit is more important than price. Make sure your clothes fit you well and find a style that works for you. There are ways you can look good without being over the top (ie. skull patterned khakis). Girls will notice guys that dress subtly well.

As someone who attends a top university, no. There's always a handful of people plunging head first into the preppy look, and a few even manage to pull it off, but most students at top schools wear the same things as state school kids; t-shirts, jeans, and hoodies

To the OP, there's nothing wrong with dressing well, just don't try too hard or you'll end up looking like andry bernard

Thanks for all the advice guys.

Some more info about me: I'am a middle-class (towards lower-middle I guess) kid going to Columbia this fall.

Also, I checked out some of the brands you guys recommended. lol I very much doubt I can afford too much of them. :(

I'm middle class too, no worries... check out outlet stores (not sure where you're from) or go to filenes basement, marshalls, etc. I know the marshalls on Boylston street in Boston has tons of ralph lauren button up shirts and stuff for really cheap ($30ish) if I remember correctly. You really only need 1 or 2 nice pairs of jeans, you don't have to wash them very often. If you need any dress clothes or stuff like that the two best places IMO are 1. Ebay (for ties especially, you can get very nice used ones that are basically new for $20-$30 each) and definitely check the buying and selling section on styleforum.net - tons of great deals to be found and very very knowledgable sellers. Also if you go to place like Macy's or something to buy a bunch of shit, apply for their store credit card - thats usually good for at least 20% off your purchase. I spent about a month and a half buying a summer business wardrobe this past spring and I saved a shit load of money by doing these things.

I went to a "top" school and a tiny number of students dressed this way. Most wore jeans and a t-shirt/hoodie/buttondown with a shirt under it.

I often find that a nice cape complements almost any outfit (also makes you look badass like Harry Potter or Batman).

Under my tutelage, you will grow from boys to men. From men into gladiators. And from gladiators into SWANSONS.

Woah, don't shit on the patterned Brooks pants. Pair those with a navy or even a white linen blazer and you're golden.

The issue is knowing your surroundings. If you're tasteful and in good company, you can get away with anything. If you're wearing those with Gucci bit loafers and you're the only kid at school not in a t-shirt, yeah you're an asshole.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

Some more info about me: I'am a middle-class (towards lower-middle I guess) kid going to Columbia this fall. I've already met up with a bunch of people from my class and they all dress very well. Some actually look like characters straight out of Gossip Girl. :/ I, on the other hand, look like a slacker lol. That is why I'm pretty intent on updating my wardrobe.

Also, I checked out some of the brands you guys recommended. lol I very much doubt I can afford too much of them. :(

As for the Hollister etc. advice, I've been wearing that since like 10th grade and, no offence, I just feel it's too immature for college (especially for someone like myself who's coming out of a gap-year). jmo.

If you guys have anything else to add, feel free to do so. I've found all the serious opinions very helpful so far.

Ignore the Columbia kids. They're a bunch of snarky, shallow pretentious fucks who are a) upset they didn't get into a better Ivy and b) toolish altogether.

If you want to begin putting together a decent wardrobe on the cheap, look at Gilt Groupe. You won't have the money to get active with their sales, but you can begin to get a taste for some better brands. Look at how they dress the models. Understand taste, and develop style. Fashion is not style. Fashion is fleeting, vulgar, and common at best. Style is lasting, it's unique to each person, and it's classic. Start to get used to all the stuff, read the Gilt MANual, get conversant in sartorialism.

Stay on top of sales at places like J Crew, Brooks Brothers, J Press, Gap, Calvin Klein, Bonobos ... and scan sites like Burberry, Hermes, and brands you won't be able to afford for years but can still appreciate. You'll start to learn sale schedules, you can gradually build out your wardrobe, and you'll learn when it's alright to splurge on a piece that's a little expensive but worth every cent. Don't buy anything if you don't love it. Better to have a few solid, versatile, quality pieces to match your current clothes with than buy a whole bunch of just-barely-better-than-complete-shit stuff because you're moving to school in a month and a half.

I like the advice, but I'd avoid Gap if you can - in Brooks, J. Press, and J. Crew you have to try a bit harder to go wrong. And you definitely don't need anything from Burberry or Hermes in college, as nice as they are to look at.

Also 100% agree on keeping track of sales and building your wardrobe out slowly - see what people are wearing on campus and then just try to imitate that, if you are worried about having your clothes stand out/not fit in.

Hi, Eric Stratton, rush chairman, damn glad to meet you.

K-mart has some specials going on for this season, lots of cool light-up shoes to choose from. Wal-mart is always a top notch choice and you can never go wrong with Target. However, for those days where you really feel the need to take people's breath away, try some Aeropostale.

Good luck!

I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

Here is all you need:

Shirts: Brooks Brothers button downs (slim-fit or extra slim-fit). Ralph Lauren polo shirts in solid colors. A couple of dress shirts (RL, BB, or equivalent). Don't buy any t-shirts.

Pants: Pair or two of dark, slim jeans. Not sure of the brand, but there are tons of good looking ones out there, many of which aren't that expensive. Just get simple, basic, no fancy stuff on the pockets, and no crazy washes or distressing. A few pairs of flat front khaki pants, maybe one or two in other colors like blue or navy. Also some khaki shorts.

Jackets: Buy a fleece for fall and a peacoat or something similar for winter.

Shoes: Buy some basic boat shoes from Sperry, maybe some penny loafers. Rainbow sandals for the summer. A pair or two of basic casual tennis shoes.

BAM - now you look like a put-together but not cartoonishly well-dressed college student. All of these were basically the standard at my Ivy university.

If you can't afford this stuff new, buy them on eBay used. Absolutely no problem with that - people sell them all the time in great condition for way less than retail. I wouldn't buy boat shoes used because people wear them without socks, but otherwise you should be golden.

Do not buy any t-shirts or hoodies - you will accumulate this stuff, usually for free, when you get on campus. This is coming from a guy who has boxes full of free t-shirts from college and doesn't know what to do with them. And hoodies look ridiculous, anyway.

The only reason I mentioned Gap is for their jeans. Not everyone can go straight to APC selvage, True Religion, Lucky, or Seven For All Mankind. There are a ton of designers, sartorialists, and general style enthusiasts who swear by that denim. It's surprisingly solid quality for $50 denim, liked it better than almost any denim I've tried that wasn't raw wash.

Also look at Rugby (Ralph Lauren's younger line), tons of university-esque stuff in there. Oxford shirts, ties, blazers, vests, chinos, you name it ... and most of it's relaxed enough to look fairly effortless, you'll look put together without trying too hard.

The only reason I mentioned the luxe brands is because it's important to get an idea of what the trendsetting brands are putting out seasonally. You won't be buying from them, but a huge part of cultivating your style is learning how to pick up seasonal ideas without falling slave to fashion and having to entirely change your wardrobe every quarter. Burberry, Hermes, Armani, and most of the other hallmark Italian and English brands are great for this.

Sorry dude... Gap jeans are shit. So are True Religion and to a lesser extent Sevens. Invest in a pair of raw denim.

Truth, if it's sold in a Bread & Butter, it's an overly expensive pair of jeans distinguished from levi's only by the stitching on the back pockets. Selvage is where it's at.

Bro, less Abercrombie & Fitch... this is college not high school..

On a related note, I'm in Europe doing a summer internship right now and people in their 20's love Hollister/A&F here. There are FUCKING lines to get into the local Hollister store. And T-Shirts are like 30 Euros. Its a disgrace.

Come on man, A&F got some pretty upscale clothing for college...but I agree, I had more Structure/ Hollister in college than A&F

Still I Rise

J. Crew, BB, Banana Republic (chinos), Polo/RL, Seven Jeans, etc. Jpress if you're that sort of guy... As for style guides: you can read magazines or style blogs for tips but it's always best to get ideas from around campus. Watch for people with a style you like and steal/copy. You'll need a few hoodies: nike's are great.

It's important to dress in a way that makes you feel comfortable. If you feel out of place in jeans and a tee, switch to khakis and a Polo. Anything from a t-shirt to a Polo and jeans to khakis is acceptable on a college campus, regardless of what campus it is. Just make sure you're not wearing any of that torn/frayed shit. It doesn't last as long (tears easier) and looks meh, in my opinion.

Maybe 1% of the people at the school I'm at wear collared shirts/nice shorts or pants. I couldn't give a fuck. The other 99% of the school is aiming for mediocrity. I'm dressing for the industry I want to be in and so when I run into an MD or partner at a firm I look presentable. If you dress well, your professors will probably notice, too, and be more likely to help you in your job hunt. Remember, everywhere is your networking opportunity. Looking like you just rolled out of bed isn't going to help.

No of course not, just like I wouldn't wear boat shoes to the gym or a tie to class. That said, I and most of the people around that I saw would wear button downs or polos, khakis and jeans, and definitely New Balances/Sperrys/loafers. Honestly they're pretty comfortable and you just look a little more put together. I would wear hoodies occasionally, but usually it was to/from the gym or if I was pulling an all-nighter or something.

H&M/Zara/JCrew/BananaRepublic/GAP/AmericanApparel

That stuff is all really cheaply made. Honestly, if you (like me) can't afford to buy nice stuff retail, then eBay is your friend. Check out this eBay store:

http://shop.ebay.com/tresbienshop/m.html?_clu=2&_fcid=1&_localstpos=100…

If your style is H&M/Zara/American Apparel (all of which is way too "trendy" for me, but some people like it) then the brands here should be right up your alley. They're much better made, will look better, last longer, and just be smarter purchases. Plus they're probably considered more luxury brands or whatever, if that kind of thing makes you feel good.

So seriously - stop buying stuff at Banana Republic and the like. That place is horrible and really not very competitively priced for the shit they sell. A suit there is ~$500 when you can get a Brooks Brothers/J. Press suit on sale for that, or an even better suit on eBay.

J. Crew is the one place on that list that's passable, but honestly I go there more to look around since the prices are still pretty expensive, given the product they're selling.

It takes a little bit of time and effort, but use eBay e-mail alerts or RSS feeds. That way, when something your size that's the brand you want pops up, you'll know about it immediately.

Hi, Eric Stratton, rush chairman, damn glad to meet you.

There are so many second hand boutiques in New York. I'm sure I'll catch shit from anti-hipsters but go over to Williamsburg, the second hand spot that gives pink bags. I picked up a Dior Homme sweater for 35 bucks, they had Burberry trenches for 75 or 100. YSL button downs for 40. Someone else mentioned Marshalls and Filenes Basement too, I would hit these in Boston. Filenes vault has Missoni, Prada, Gucci and a bunch of other stuff for decent prices.

Also, wrt APC, you can get their treated denim on good sale one season after. I like their raw too but you can get some light destressed shit for about a hundred.

It's their eBay shop, so they post stuff when they want to get rid of things on sale. Other places do this too, such as Aspinal of London (http://myworld.ebay.com/aspinaloflondon/).

What I mean is that there isn't always stuff there, but they repost things every once in a while, so worth checking back.

say fk you to looking like a student wear only chinos flashy sox, tailored shirts, nice belts(ferragamo or zegna ideally hermes is a bit too flashy), and some nice moccassins or loafers.

Then go some hipsters and make fun of em.

Girl just go to college and see what other girls are wearing! it totally, totally depends on your campus environment (physical and social--whether or not it's cold there, whether girls are dressier to begin with).

At my college, most girls wore regular skinny jeans/leggings with casual tops. a handful of girls had a great sense of style, but they were usually casual/practical (no 5" platform heels, more like oxfords with tights and cute dresses online, such as a site named gbridal). but, it gets chilly there and most people focus on their education more than anything else. I visited UCLA, and the girls there tend to dress better, because the surrounding environment is more stuffy/based on looks.

Nobody cares about brands in college, although that depends on your social circle. if you have the money for Hermes bags, it just means your precious mommy and daddy give you lots of spending money lol. wear sensible but cute clothes; i.e. don't wear clubbing clothes and platform heels when it's 50 degrees outside and your classes are a mile apart.
