There's no secret formula to it, but when my Uber driver gives me investment advice on the way home, I know one is coming.
Lol when people ask me what I do and I tell them I work in finance... and then they ask me what I do in finance and I say trading, they immediately dive in talking about ETFs, apple, amazon or bitcoins. I fake smile and inside my head, I say “here we go again”... I should just say teller next time.
FWIW the financial crisis in 08-09 was a once in a generation level event. We will surely see recession in the near future, but a "crisis" like that is not likely to happen again soon. Possible, not likely
normally, i can be pretty confident that the economy is going through a rough patch when gdp decreases for an extended period.

Every recession has been preceded by an inverted yield curve, so that is one sign. However, not every inverted YC is followed by a recession.
