Offer secured... I want out.

So bascially, I have achieved the "first step": getting my foot into the door. Last week, I got a "top" IBD offer with the firm of my dreams for next summer, which will be my sophomore summer.

Looking back, a major reason I attended this target school was that I wanted to break into "the street". And now that I have done that, I realize it may have been the *only reason... I'm not necessarily a great fit for the school, and I kinda feel like I'm missing out on the fun campus life and stuff that other college students get.

So my thought process is... f*** it. Let's go to UT-Austin, or U-Miami, or somewhere else that's way more fun and more laid back for a couple years. Has anyone else considered a transfer? I mean, it's not like they'll take my offer away or anything, and if I really care about "prestige".... well that's what an MBA is for, right?

Right?

EDIT for clarity: Not at a target known for it's campus life. Probably pretty easy to deduce where but that's not important.

What school are you going to that's impossible to have fun at? West Point? Cornell?

I went to a really nerdy school and had a blast. I don't know. Not many excuses. I feel like college nowadays is less fun than it was before.

Be excellent to each other, and party on, dudes.

Lol so true. Most top targets have good party culture. Ivies are huge with Greek life, Stanford seems fun and is big-time D1, maybe if you're in the Stern or Wharton bubble you're surrounded by freaks and geeks but other than that I'm not sure how bad it can be.

Just take easier classes and chill out man you don't need to leave your school. Most targets grade inflate anyway.

Sounds 100% like Cornell, fuck that shithole.

Imagine being stuck in an icy cold hell but you have to walk 20 minutes outside to get each destination on uneven terrain.

Congrats on the offer! Maybe you just need to take a step back and start seeking more "fun" opportunities at the school you are at. Potentially transferring to a different more seemingly fun school, could potentially hurt the trajectory of your career lets say you want to do PE or make it a bit harder for MBA, going to a prestigious school never hurt anyone. But then again you may prioritize fun more then academics/prestige, which is then up to you.

Nah, Cornell has a great Greek life. Out of all the targets, the only one without a great social scene is probably Chicago or Columbia.

How about just hop on a plane every friday to join your friends in Miami/other cities? With the money from the internship this should be doable and might make your experience better.

Unfortunately your undergrad will continue to make a difference on your resume - for alumni networking, for business school, and during interviews when you have to explain either two names (expect a "why did you transfer colleges?" question from every interview going forward) or just leave the one non/semi-target school on your resume which erases the hard work you did to get into the target (the hardest part of the whole experience).

Based on the evidence you have provided so far, I'm in the camp of "rub one out and reassess" both literally and metaphorically. What do you like to do? Go do that. Take a break from the hardo lifestyle. Especially if you want to switch away from banking it will still be helpful to be at a target school.

let me tell you that there are naturally less people who might be “fun” but they exist - people who are fun and easygoing by nature- whether they’re partiers or not.

where are all the fun kids? they can be fun in a whimsical way and when grounded or have the capacity to be mature as well- holy shit, best people ever. make the best of your situation, there is a way to manage your situation and create your own fun. Seek it out at your school and try to get 2-5-15 people to go out to bars in the city away from your school if it’s too nerdy. Go make friends at local other colleges and go to parties there. Get your fun in a place where fun is good.

Stay at your school but that doesn’t mean you can’t go to where fun is best- I mean you said it yourself exactly just in different terms. A target is great for getting to high Finance. A party school is great for partying. But trust me you don’t want to be there 24/7 because it’s about CAPACITY and FRAMING— much easier to be a degenerate and party all the time with freedom of a fat bank account but without one you’re just a degenerate. Yes you can still get a top IB job, but you do lose some capacity for a party school which isn’t worth it (maybe it is to you, that’s ultimately your decision). But who says you can’t hang out with them now. Work a job then get cheap tickets every other week to Florida during random days and go party. IDK. Make the best with a better situation don’t throw it away. Make it work and try to relax about FOMO

Fun does not depend on your school but depends on you. There is always a sense of FOMO, and what if I went to another school. But if you keep thinking like this you’ll always be depressed and want out. Rather think what you can do, do you want to go clubbing with friends? Host parties? Go to the movies? Go on dates with chicks? Anything is possible

This made me feel better about choosing UT Austin over Stern lol. I chose it mainly because of money though, but lifestyle is a huge plus (except this pandemic threw a wrench in that). Always an MBA if I need more prestige.

Assuming you’re at one of the before mentioned target schools (uchi/stern) just stick it out. I went to a “fun/party” non-target school and had a blast. However your undergrad stays with you long into your career. Never know how it may affect your recruitment for future roles or MBA chances.

I’m also a strong believer that you can make your own fun wherever you go. Find people on the same wavelength and make some heinous memories.
