How did you decide your "exit-op" destination?

For those who are not gunning for PE, how did you figure out what you wanted to do after your IB stint? If you went into IB with some destination in mind, did your plans change and why? For those who have successfully exited, how did you know you'd be successful in your final industry/role?

Been trying to answer this question a lot lately, with the added consideration that as a non-US citizen I'm also trying to decide where I want to be located going forward. Look forward to hearing your thoughts.
