How did you hear about us?

How did you hear about us?

The interview question that pops up from time to time and one that I cannot seem to master. Truthfully I found out about most banking firms and also which ones are fantastic (Piper Jaffray) from WSO, not the vault guide, WSJ, or from my elite ivy peers. However I've run into a terrible quandry when truthfully answering the question with "WSO", but I don't know why!!! Can someone explain to me?

So I was interviewing with a sweet boutique and they asked me that question, "How did you hear about us?" I had nailed every single technical down to the last point in concise and succinct explanations and hit it off quite well with the CFO (of all people to interview me!).He was laughing and smiling, talking my ear off about himself and with one last chuckle asked me that one question. I instinctively went from the truth, "WSO". I'm not even sure if he acknowledged my answer but we moved on and everything went well... until I got the ding the next day.

So do you guys reveal that you read WSO? I feel like they'd wonder if I'm the tard fordhammaster or something

P.S. it was FTP

hahah i have no idea if these posts by the piper jaffray names are real or not. but.. supposing that it is real..

I would not say that you heard about the firm through WSO. It would be wiser to say that you heard about the firm from people in the industry, blogs, and online forums/resources. Sounds really nerdy and toolish if you directly refer to WSO.com (no offense Patrick).

If you're still in college and the firm is lesser known firm (which are most likely to ask this question) you best answer, if you can pull it off is...

  • as I realized I wanted to work in investment banking, I started reaching out to alum/friends etc... in the industry to learn as much about the space as possible
  • the more I spoke to people, the more I came to appreciate that I was really fascinated by/inclined towards [insert group here] (M&A, restructuring, energy, industrials), so I began asking asking for references from family/friends/alum so I could learn more about [insert group]
  • along the way, one person in particular really helped me along and became a mentor to me, through this process I realized I would do best in a culture which is X, Y and Z
  • as I began looking for firms which had these values/culture/qualities, [insert firm name here] kept coming up

The key to this answer is: - being able to answer follow-up questions that shows you did your homework (i.e. what other firms are you considering (should be similar to the one your interviewing), what specifically about the culture, who was your mentor, why did he think you'd do well in the culture, etc... - you could be asked for a name, so you would need to actually have a real person in mind who would back you up, if they happen to have a mutual acquaintance

Bottom line, do your homework and you can nail the question by saying that someone else who knows you VERY well and has experience in the industry, saw something in you that made them think you would not only be a great fit for the industry/group but also for a culture similar to the one at that firm

I'm a part of my the investment banking club at my school, so in my cover letters or interviews I usually say that I learned through them. A smart thing that I just thought of is looking at their recent big transactions, finding a copy of the wsj or someplace that covered it, read the article, and then say that you were simply reading the paper and came accross that transaction and their company, wanted to learn more about their operations and started researching and now feel that they are the best firm in the whole wide world.

I'm assuming that just saying "I ran into you guys on the internet" is not good enough of an answer. How should one go about handling this question? I'm talking about rather obscure boutiques w/out great rep.

Just say you saw them online. If they're small no need to inflate their egos.. just be honest. You'll move on to the next, and more important question which is... why do you want to work here?

trust me
