Digital Practices for MBB

Hey guys,

I was wondering what the recruiting process is for the digital practices at MBB (digital Mckinsey etc.) are. I did my undergrad in econ and finished in April and currently work in tech as a BA and i wanted to know what my chances are for MBB positions if i apply to their digital practices. Is it more/less competitive than the generalist route? how can i increase my chances? would it look good that i come from business side of tech? is networking really important or is it just gpa, work experience etc?

If it helps i have a summer in big 4 consulting and one doing strategy work for a social enterprise. I believe since i have less than 2 years of experience i can still apply for a first year consultant position and i still have access to my school which is a target.

If you have started FT work at a different company, you may not apply through on campus recruiting, and have to go through experienced hire recruiting which is unfortunately, infinitely more difficult.

Networking is therefore key, and you will need to network to even get your resume considered. You may be best off getting an MBA recruiting through those channels.

Digital recruiting process is pretty much identical to generalist, and isn't necessarily harder or easier, but you will be evaluated by Digital Partners rather than other Partners. Your experience in tech may help you in the decision round and getting the interview, but your performance in interviews will be the main deciding factor.

Right, so i know Mckinsey lets you apply for BA positions for sure. For Bain and BCG im not sure, but, i am still registered at my university but done with my courses, will get my degree in Dec if that helps. Regardless i do think i will need to network either way, would you say its better to email junior (BA/AC) staff or more senior ones? should i mention my work history a bit in my initial email? should i just be emailing Digital consultants?

For the MBA route, the few people from my company that do go for them usually end up in good schools and that is certainly something i'm considering but for now i want to at least try and get interviews.

Hmm. I have a similar offer from McK and got a similar feeling about the relationship to the consulting business. On the other hand, I am legitimately interested in technology, whereas you appear not be and view this as a stepping stone with some McK branded goodness. I would be careful.

The talent markets understand pretty well the difference between a consulting position and a support position. Furthermore, support staff are not always treated well (it varies).
