How do I know which is the right fit for me in finance?
I'm an Italian undergrad student and I'll move to the UK on September for a MSc in Accounting and Finance (Bath) or Business with A&F (Warwick). I don't have work experiences in finance and I won't be able to have any of them until moving to the UK. The sector I'm most interested in is asset/wealth management, but I'd like to know from others what would be the best fit for me based on my personality/skills.
I'm quite shy/introvert and I have a hard time interacting with people, and I noticed that my mind thinks and anaylizes things better when I'm alone and I can think without others around me. I'm good at working hard and doing tasks in a short period of time, but I'm not great at leading and inspiring others. I don't love Math so even though quant finance or computer science could have been good choices for me, I have to exclude them. In all the jobs I had, I noticed that I've always tried to compensate my lack of social skills with hard and fast work, being an example for others because of my work ethics. I can of course lead, I had some roles where I had to lead a group, but I always do it because "I have to" or "someone has to do it" and not because I enjoy doing it.
What would guys think would be good roles for me?
equity research
What I will say is you seem to have a very fixed mindset. Saying that you're not good with people etc. There is no job in finance (outside of maybe quant stuff) that doesn't evolve into a more social role. Wealth management is especially client-facing and social skills are very necessary.
You need to be of the mindset that these are skills you can improve (because you can). That being said, in the short term, research (I'd actually point to credit rather than equity) or AM would suit your style.
Why don't you opt for research courses finance then further get a PhD.
In finance, a good socializing and communication skill is a prerequisite here.
