How do I lose weight

Hey everyone,

I have been living with my parents since WFH. I have gained a crazy amount of weight. Pre pandemic, I usually wouldn't get a lot of time for lunch and would just end up eating a salad. Dinner was seamless. I would usually just get a smoothie or lean protein and veggies. Ever since I have been home, my mom has been feeding me big unhealthy lunches. It is so hard to resist all the homemade food. At this rate, I won't fit into any of my clothes pretty soon. How do you all (especially all the ladies) stick to a healthy routine? Any weight loss tips?

Make some time to jog 15 minutes everyday first thing in the morning, drink more water, try to throw in more veggies into your meals. Another 'trick' is to eat your meals regardless if you feel hungry or not, if you wait until you're hungry that's when you end up eating what you shouldn't. Just avoid caloric/meal restriction because they're all bogus, the above will make the weight fall off effortlessly without even trying which is the goal.

The only way to lose lbs besides becoming more dehydrated is to take in less calories than you burn. Track your calories and exercise. Its great if you exercise immediately after meals too (especially dinner). Burn off that blood sugar spike :).

Plenty of ways...this isnt rocket science. Cut down on carbs intake (ie no more bread rice and pasta) or go full keto if you want. Consume fewer calories - stop snacking on shit randomly, eat smaller portions several times a day, cut out the creamer and sugar in the coffee, etc If it doesnt come from the earth directly dont eat it (in other words, drink water and coffee, eat veggies and protein....its simple)

You can, and should, add in some type of workout (can be cardio or weights), but the diet is almost everything when it comes to weight and fitness

It’s really just diet and exercise.

Diet: plan your meals for the week and grocery shop according to those ingredients. Plan healthy stuff that’s tasty, bowls are super easy to make (rice, veggies, meat, and throw in seasoning and some other toppings like hummus or bell peppers). You can switch it up between things. With WFH it should be more reasonable to devote 20 mins to cooking a really good meal that’ll last 2-3 days.

Exercise: The best workout is the one you can do consistently. You may get excited about the new P1000x Triple Abs body burner Pilates BJJ yoga workout, but if you only last a week it’s nearly worthless. I run 3-4 miles every morning. I can do it consistently and it’s shaved off my weight. When I first started I was huffing and puffing at the 0.75 mile mark. It takes time, build up to a good pace, keep it consistent.

There’s not much more to it than that. Happy to provide some recipes I love (I get 99% of my food from Trader Joe’s too).

Have you tried intermittent fasting? I did a thread about water fasting months ago and a lot of monkeys recommended IF to me. It works!

Easiest way is to just become vegetarian- drop meat and sugar entirely for like 3 mths and exercise and you’ll be back to normal - this is the only way that works for me cause portion control sucks. You can eat basically unlimited veggies and you’ll still lose weight

Lmao good one. I'm Indian so I can address why our dads are chubby. Firstly, most Indians aren't even vegetarian and the proportion of Indians that are vegetarian is even lower in the US. Second, Indian dads have an unfortunate habit of eating a lot and taking really slow walks as their only form of exercise. Also, the vegetarian ones are just loading up on paneer which is literally just cheese.

For non Indian dads tho, going vegetarian might work. I went vegan for 3 months as a dare/challenge thing in high school and I lost a noticeable amount of weight.

lol the chubby indian dads for sure don't drop sugar with 3 cups of chai per day and half-mile walks for exercise

It seems like you are asking for permission, in the forum, to say 'no' when food is offered to you. Permission granted.

No one controls what you eat but yourself. Not your parents. Not your significant other. Not your friends. You. Period. Say no. If they put it in front of you anyway - throw it away. Eventually they'll get the message.

Calories in vs. calories out.

There is more to it than that, but if you're eating fewer calories then you are expending in a day, you'll lose weight. If you're eating more, you'll gain weight.

Eat less.

Similar situation! Was really good about eating/exercising at school. Being home with my mom always cooking had me put on quite a few pounds since March. You’re just going to have to rip off the bandaid and tell your mom to chill with the cooking and big meals. I had to tell my mom to stop buying lots of foods. Tell her you need to lose weight and can’t when her food is so good. She’ll understand and hopefully won’t be offended.

It's really just as simple as calories in vs. calories out. Eating foods that aren't calorie dense but higher in micronutrient content (mostly vegetables) is the way to go in my opinion. Do whatever works best for you but personally when it comes to the best balance of being fit and healthy, transitioning to a plant-based diet is what's worked best for me

It's a pretty simple formula. Eat less, eat healthier, and move more. And by move I mean sweat not just go for a light walk/jog, push to the point where it's uncomfortable and maintain that anywhere from 10-30 minutes at a time. If it's easier to stack multiple 4x10 minute workouts into a day than 1x30 minute one do that, volume and intensity are the name of the game. This applies no matter what gender you are.

I ate 500-700 calories a day for 4 months. Chicken, apples, water. Dropped 90 pounds. Might not be the best way but after losing that much your mindset changes and you wanna keep it off.
