How do I renege on a job offer after signing?

How am I supposed to tell the company I want to renege my offer? Then in case of another offer what should be the best course of action? Should I first get the background check done, signing the new offer and then renege the other one or does not really matter??

Thank you WSO

Yea be smart about it. Don’t renege before you’re 100% in the clear with the other. Sure, the process will probably go smooth with the background check and everything, but you really want to take on that risk just to renege a week earlier?

As to how to renege, less is more. You don’t need to send a five paragraph apology / explanation. Rip the bandaid off and just tell them you’re unable to move forward. Don’t offer extra info
