How do you give back?
How do you give back to your community? Maybe you'll inspire others here to.
Currently I mentor undergrads at my alma mater and donate monthly to a charity I'm passionate about (tip: donate to charities through Facebook; FB pays the card fees so 100% of your donation goes to charity).
I'd like to join an organization to give back to the NYC community. Can anyone suggest volunteer orgs that help advance economic opportunity in less privileged communities? I'd be interested in teaching personal finance literacy, advising on education and career opps, mentoring underresourced kids or adults, etc.
The best way to give back is however you can!
For one I try to contribute to the discussion here and help those here with my words

I absolutely hate the term "give back".
I don't give back because I didn't take anything away. Yes, I do give to charity - more than most people, but not because I'm returning anything.
Only instances that I can think of truly "giving back" is something like donating to my alma mater since I had a partial scholarship.
Side note: It's great that you want to volunteer for stuff but if you're in finance and making good money, you really need to be writing checks. Volunteering is for people who don't have resources. You gotta step into a new role which is more important in most cases. Volunteer only to get a look at how the organization works from the inside.
By bringing new products to market that provide value to society.

^That's what I was going to say. They have a wide range of volunteer opportunities to browse and sign up for within NYC
I give to charity each year, like 10% of my pre-tax income
I give to a variety of charities and try to spread things around instead of making a bulk donation to just one thing; I figure each one could use a bit of money more than any one single one could use 10X that much money. I think Salvation Army is pretty solid for a major charity that does a variety of things. I also sponsor a kid overseas through Compassion International. And sometimes I'll do informational chats with young people who don't know about WSO yet and are in their infant stage of finance curiosity.
Of the different things I give to, the most interesting/unique of them is that I've become obsessed with koalas in Australia. Check them out on YouTube sometime. There are several animal shelters and zoos and similar organizations down there that research koalas, plant eucalyptus trees to re-grow their habitat, breed them to increase numbers and strengthen the species, lobby politically to protect their habitats, etc. Perhaps most important are the people who rescue and rehabilitate them when they've been hit by a car, bitten by a dog, etc. which is happening more and more as humans encroach on their natural habitat with residential developments and they find themselves living near and among people.
Oddly, I'm a pretty conservative person politically and socially, but I guess I'm a bleeding heart liberal tree-hugger when it comes to koalas and animals in general.
Even if for some reason you consider yourself a totally selfish person who has no interest in giving, I can tell you that on the occasional lousy day at work, I do think about the fact that me succeeding is going to directly help a harmless and kind little koala who has been bitten by a fucking dog (I love dogs, for the record) or hit by a car and is now in a place where it can recover but only if it can spend time at an animal hospital/shelter with veterinarians feeding and caring for it. Knowing that there are animals that biologically interesting and that naturally kind, loving, and harmless and that they are hurt and afraid and in trouble, and that I'm financing professionals who will love them and rehab them and get them back out into the wild healthy again with a second chance at life, that helps me push through the bad days at work.
Spending your own time and money for causes that you believe is a very conservative position. Spending other people's money for koalas is not.
So, I think that you're perfectly aligned with what you believe in by using your resources on this project. Sounds pretty awesome!
Pretty conservative as well, definitely care about animals more than people. Really want to find a org in nyc to get involved with that - maybe just a dog shelter if that’s all that is available.
There’s some saying that “libertarians love mankind yet hate their fellow man” which I connect with a lot. Would be interested if you do as well.
Recently began tutoring immigrants for the USCIS naturalization interview, rewarding to increase the tax base.
