How do you keep your models/files if you're leaving the company?
Over the past months I have created many useful models/templates on excel that help me to do my work more efficiently. All these files are saved in my work's laptop and soon I will be leaving the company. The models do not have any confidential information. How could I keep these files after leaving? I imagine IT would immediately track any transfer of files by USB as suspicious and I don't know if sending all the models to my personal email would also be flagged.
Note: I am not leaving the company now but in a few months so I want to take my files without risking getting fired.
100% not worth it. If you really want, recreate those models before you leave.
I sent all my models to myself. I really don't know what they're going to do about it if you're leaving the firm.
Just don’t want to ruin my rep in this company
Well if your lateralling, I would imagine they could get you in trouble with Finra. At my old company, someone did that in the UK office, and had his FCA (Finra equivalent) credentials revoked.
Pretty sure that no matter what creative workaround you come up with, your firm (maybe even FINRA?) very much likely has a policy against doing this. Were I you and you had a few months before leaving, I would just take some time on the weekends or each workday as you transition to have your personal Excel on one half the screen and the model on the other half and just recreate it. Should take half the time it took to build the models in the first place and then they can be yours with no problems and you haven't "sent" yourself any "proprietary" work.
You can’t do this legally. Its their intellectual property most likely.
If he recreates the models from scratch without looking at the spreadsheets, then this is legal. But using the method above, yes, it's illegal.
No one will know though.
Anytime you are asking how to do something without your company knowing you are headed down a bad path.
This is intellectual property, a firm could pursue legal action and your new employer would probably fire you.
Just email them to yourself. Don't use your work email though.
Open a private browser and go to Gmail and send it to yourself. I recently did this after leaving a global firm and have had no issues. Except the files I kept were ones I actually created from scratch so I felt I had the right to keep my own work. Just make sure there is no grey area in your company's handbook to where you may get fucked if this goes bad.
