A few ideas:

  • Join the gym and participate in classes, ask people to spot you on big lifts then start small-talk, hire a PT and befriend them…
  • Start dating, and if you meet a girl you like, her friendship group will potentially become your friends
  • Take classes in Yoga, martial arts, painting… literally anything so you can meet new people
  • Go to bars by yourself (some people won’t do this or think it’s a bad idea), and talk to the bartender or people at the bar. You will become a friendly face after a few visits
  • Get friendly with you barber
  • Start a side hustle if you have time, which I imagine you don’t, but it’s an option regardless. Teaching a language 1on1 in-person for example will open up lots of friendship opportunities

I moved from NYC to Chicago in April 2020 so perfect timing to be lonely in a new city. Only saving grace was my GF agreed to move in with me and follow me to the Midwest (so a little different).

In any case, we both did not have any previous contacts here, and it took us a solid couple months to even start having conversations with others (moved into a relatively new building so units were still filling, COVID of course, and April/May weather was still ass so not much outdoor activities).

What helped us start to open up our social circle (granted a bit easier with a SO who shares similar interests) was joining a local gym, with group focused classes. This has been by far the easiest way we’ve made friends.

When I moved from CA to NYC (also not knowing more than 5 people in the city) I did the same except with a more traditional gym, and made some contacts through constantly seeing them in the morning.

I think being open to trying new things can also encourage meeting people (we did a wheel pottery class, wine painting, playing tennis). Striking up conversations with people who are doing similar things to you, whether it’s at a bar/brewery, at a local record store, on a bike route if you’re into biking, or a jazz club, I’ve found those shared interests can help build a connection. You’re not always going to click with someone, but never hurts to have a conversation and see where it goes. The similar activities helps because it allows you to see them more often and see if they’re someone you’d like to hangout with. Still finding our place in Chicago, but these things have helped so hope this might be helpful for you!

When I was in NYC I joined a rugby club which was great, huge drinking culture too so all in all it was great fun and great way to meet similar people. Would recommend doing that for whatever team sport you’re into. Also great for your physical well-being so it’s win win
