How do you network with the sources of capital?

Ok so let’s say you’re a PE associate in a shop with the usual hierarchy. How do you network so that in 5 years you know the “right” people? By right I really mean the source of capital you would need to launch your own PE shop. Yes, in these 5 years you will come to know a lot of bankers consultants LPs etc, but really how and what do you do to get (a) noticed and (b) liked by those who can at some point down the line back your entrepreneurial ambitions?
