How do you protect your eyesight when staring at a screen 12 hours a day
With the pandemic I find myself looking at screens for increasing longer time during the day, something like 10+ hours every day, which often times causes dry and sore eyes. Now as a student I am still able to cut down my screen time if I really need to, but finance professionals seem to be in front of screens all day long, especially traders who are required to pay close attention to market movements. So what steps do you guys take to protect your eyesight? And maybe other areas of your body like back, wrist, or shoulder that might hurt after being in a chair for too long?
Would like to know as well. Have no science expertise whatsoever, but if I’m already very nearsighted (-6.0) should I be concerned for my eyesight long term when I’m older?
Use the Dark Reader Chrome extension to set the default background for most webpages to black... you can do something similar with MS Office themes as well. In addition to being easier on the eyes (I used to get headaches all the time before switching) it has the advantage of looking really freakin' cool
just started using the extension. Seems to be helping my eyes already. Thanks!

SB to you because I can't believe there are people still out there who aren't using Dark Reader. I literally can't even watch a YT video where somebody doesn't use it. It's dire.
Had some ER friends that would use blue-light blocking glasses. Earnings season hurts I guess
Is that more beneficial to just using the blue-light filter on laptop/phone?
Lmao wtf are you smoking. Does putting yellow bulbs help protect your eyesight if you look directly into it? Just get the glasses 10/10 recc

I do eyedrops a couple times a day to keep my eyes nice n lubed
Also had a blue light filter on my glasses which I think genuinely helped. I know they sell glasses with the blue light filters without the need for a prescription, so if it’s really bugging you I’d recommend looking into it
Drink water

Blue Light Glasses For Sure. Know a few friends that wear them that are older than me. I personally don't think they make you learn nerdy, particularly if the goal is to protect your eyes and get work done efficiently.
Turn the brightness down to min on your laptop. It feels like reading a book and works fine for me.
There are apps to give your monitor a yellow tint or you can use blue light glasses from a brand like Gunnar Optiks.
blue light glasses since 2018
do they actually work/help?
Went to go talk to a specialist during my last eye exam and was told that the blue light lenses may not be as effective as they seem. Not much evidence out there about them helping, best thing to do is to take breaks periodically from looking at a screen for a couple of minutes.
^^ This advice really makes a big difference. I recently had a period where I started getting dry and burning eyes after sitting too long in front of the screen. Ended up consulting an eye specialist, who suggested that I should look briefly away from the screen and focus my vision on something else a couple of times an hour. Have followed the advice and not had any issues since then. So stop staring so hard at the screen when you are working!
Haven't tried blue light lenses yet, so I can't really comment on them though.
Felix Gray blue light glasses for me. They look good and work well.
Agreed. I have a pair and my eyes feel so much better at the end of / throughout the day. Quite surprising but I feel more energized / awake during the day as well.
A family member is an optometrist, she says the research doesn't actually show if blue filter lenses help, so stay away from them because they're a con basically. I work on the computer/look at my phone upwards of 12 hours a day - highly recommend looking outside & something green every 15-20 minutes so you let your eyes re-focus (professional advice i was given 🙃).
I would suggest taking frequent breaks, looking far into the horizon, going for walks while taking conference calls. Have you looked into ortho-k contact lenses for myopia control? Many people in finance are using standing desks to relieve their backs. When I visited GS trading floor in NYC before the pandemic, I would say 25-30% of traders were utilizing standing desks.
Had the same problem in the beginning. Don't worry, your eyes will build a tolerance.
Blue light glasses here as well - someone on a different thread a few weeks back shat on them but I love mine and feel a huge difference. Bought a second pair for TV / phone usage late night too. Felix Gray as well.
1) Buy the lighest pair of glasses you can get (don't focus on buying brand named frames, I made that mistake and feel like my nose is getting a workout from holding my frame. Your nose will thank you when you're wearing extremely light frames for many hours. )
2) Buy special lenses that protect the eyes from light (helps a lot)
A third option is to have a sparing match with Daniel Cormier from the UFC and you'll be able to claim a disability for being blind and not having to work at all.
Turn on Night light / night shift on your phone and computer. The screen produces a slight orange tint to counteract harmful blue light.
