How do you tough it out when you're unhappy at work?

I am a newish (2 years out) grad, working in a (non IB) industry that often gets mentioned on here. The job itself is a bit irrelevant to my issue.

I'm lucky to be in the position I'm at. My small private company has stayed fairly stable throughout Covid19. My working hours really good, outside of being on call. I like the company 'culture' for the most part, and the top leadership is highly respected and decently employee-centric. I see my current position as more of a stepping stone; the company is fully aware of my ambitions, and want to move me to those goals. They were going to move me into the transactional role I wanted, but it a bit put on hold right now due to Coronavirus and the panic (and economic pressures) associated with it.

But...for the parts I'm struggling with

1) My current coworker, a "senior" with a lot of experience, is extremely difficult to work with. It's an older person with no formal college education. They definitely add their value to the organization, but they are very protective of their work, and constantly step on my toes (while being extremely sensitive to the reverse happening). In my job function, it feels like I'm more concerned doing dumb tasks to please them, rather than actually doing effective work for my company. Sadly, they have been here 5+ years, and multiple people have left due to them. If and when I get the promotion I want, I won't have to deal with them nearly as much, but for the time being it's really hard.

2) I've outgrown my current job a bit. It's been 2 years in, essentially, the same title. As I said, they have been willing to move me into the role I want, but it is now a bit indefinite due to Coronavirus. The kind of...uncertainty kills me, especially because I've never been interested in my current job as anything more than a foot in the door.

I'm just not happy currently. It really feels like I'm just going through the motions. My motivation has been minimal in the past few months working from home.

At the same time, I can't really do anything to change it. There's no way I can (or would want to) switch companies in this economy. As well, getting the role change I want is way more likely at the current shop.

How did you cope through the ebbs and flows of a career and office politics, and keep the end goal in sight?

You need to try to figure out why you're at this standstill and why the company is not promoting or treating you the way you want. When are you going to get promoted? Next year? If so, tough it out so you can get rid of that manager. I know what you mean by having a terrible manager. It can really demoralize you and make you feel like you are terrible at your job or not able to do what you think you are supposed to do at the company.

Alternatively, if you've been there for 2 years and you really can't stand it, then look at other options. There are a lot of companies out there that are looking to hire even during this time so try getting your feet wet by networking and exploring what's out there.

Will update my computer soon and leave Incognito so I will disappear forever. How did I achieve Neanderthal by trolling? Some people are after me so need to close account for safety.

Thank you!

I think the company is promoting me semi on to schedule. It's a bit less structured of an environment. I would be the youngest person moving into the job if I get it. I don't want to give away too many details, because I've posted about my job on here before.

The worst part is the bad coworker. It feels like they are gaslighting me. Basically, they constantly push and pull. Talk about how they want to move responsibility to my desk, and then they just start doing it the next week. They have done this to other people before, I just think it's their personality. But then again, the people in charge seem to like me (and know that said person is difficult).
