How does a non-US student go about getting an internship in America?

Hey guys,

I am currently a 2nd year Econ student from NZ who studies in a UK target(think LSE/UCL/Warwick).
I am really interested in getting an internship for the 2018 summer in IB/AM/PE/S&T in the US.

How achievable is my goal? My current plan is to find some smaller companies and send them my CV over email or cold-message some employees on Linkedin. I am shying away from the BBs as most of them already have internships going on the UK so they will be wondering why I am not applying there instead.

Any tips/pointers would be appreciated!
