Most PE firms are not big enough to need a staffer. You only really need a staffer if you need to dedicate someone to allocating resources as opposed to just grabbing whoever is available.
My firm has a staffer. Works pretty much just like banking.
At mine a principal is the staffer for 6 months at a time then it rotated to another principal. Firm of ~20 investment professionals.
