How far back does a IB background check go?

Very curious about this. Asking because 10 years ago, I had started a international non-profit which did well initially but shut down after 5 years. Yet in the period that it did well, it did really well and allowed me to learn quite a bit which would be relevant about investment banking. However, because it shut down 5 years ago, I'm not even sure where the original documentation would be.

As a result, how far do background checks go, and how would they handle potentially complicated situations like the one above? Thanks so much.

Depending on the kind of documentation, seven years is your window typically.

Your real problem, on a personal level, is if you were the lead of this organization, why the hell didn't you keep any of the documentation yourself?! Not a good sign...

Thanks so much for the response. I probably will have it somewhere but it'll probably take time to find it. A few follow up questions if you don't mind.

1). Assume I have 5 internships in my resume. Do I provide references for all 5 as part of my background check or any 2 ones that I select? I ask because I left one of the internships on a bad note with my boss and I'm pretty sure you won't have positive words for me.

2). Can you just briefly go through the usual process of a background check? You fill up your name, address, etc and what sort of documents does one to provide? Thanks so much.

Any other opinions on my question above will also be much appreciated. Cheers!
