Let's say you interview with HR and he/she wants to schedule you with the hiring manager for the next round. How far out do you schedule? For example, since it's Thursday today, is next Tuesday reasonable or is there a chance you can get lost under a better candidate who comes through during this time frame?

Next tuesday should be fine. Just try to interview sometime next week. Usually firms won't make a decision untill they finish interviewing everyone that they have scheduled.
