How important is it to get a return offer as a sophomore?
Does it ever come up on interviews? The firm I'm at does give out return offers for underclassmen but it's very rare.

bump - to clarify, I'm not in IB this summer and wanting to do IB next summer
Not important at all. Never came up in my interviews or anyone else's interviews that I know of. I would suggest (if you are about to enter your junior year) to focus on IB recruiting for SA 2019 as it has already begun and, at some places, has already ended.
With the accelerated speed at which IB recruiting has been going at so far for SA 2019, most positions will likely be filled before the end of sophomore internships, meaning that return offers will not have been given out yet, therefore I don't think it has much relevance
On the other hand they will ask you what you're doing at your current internship, so don't just phone it in and focus on 2019 completely. Try to get some sort of experience in whatever field and be able to talk about your role/what you've learned.
