How long can you remain an analyst?

I’m thinking about my future and plan on going to grad school. However, I’d like to pay off my undergrad debt first (and it’s highly unlikely my parents will support me during grad school. It’s unrealistic).

My question is, how long can someone be an analyst at places like JPMORGAN, Citi, Barclays etc...

I’ve heard of 1st year and 2nd year analysts... and maybe even 3rd year, but what’s after that? Are you just fired? Transferred? I heard it’s hard to get promoted to an associate straight from an analyst.

(Sorry for grammar and typos. I’m typing this on my phone).

Usually 3 years is maximum for analysts. I have heard that sometimes, if you are a true IB rockstar but there aren't any associate positions available to get you promoted, firms may keep you alive for a 4th year. This usually happens at regional offices, where teams are smaller.

Besides this, it is "up or out": If you don't get promoted to associate, you should start looking for a job somewhere else.
