How long can/should you stay at a place where you don’t like the culture?
Hi guys:
Was wondering what your thoughts on this are: I’m one year into my current role, and I think I don’t like the culture here - it’s intellectually stagnant, some amount of favoritism /politics (probably above average), the business is holding on but not growing, not enough responsibility to grow professionally (very slow). The upside is that it is stable for now, pays okay (average), and right now it’s hard to find a job.
I’m mostly unhappy about the intellectual stagnation and lack of responsibility- should I do at least two years here before looking to make a jump?
How important is culture for your long-term success at a fund? I don’t feel painful here but i can’t say I’m happy either. I know every job has its own challenges, so just want to make sure I’m not being too nit picky.
OP here, just to add:
How important is culture in terms of a person’s long-term success at a place? I’m not miserable here, but I am unsatisfied (and don’t think it will change). I know that every workplace has its own issues, so I just want to see how you guys think about culture, and I want to make sure I’m not being too nitpicky here. Thanks!
Culture is everything at PE funds. You have no future at any fund where you don't fit in culture-wise. If your end-goal is to stay in PE, implicitly you are trying to someday become a Partner, and that is just that, a partnership. If you don't jive with the culture of that partnership, you're not going to make it.
If you've already recognized this, you might as well leave as soon as possible. Only reason to stay once you've made this realization is for the deal reps. I would not stay longer than 2 years.
Options:
1) Leave now to try to “start fresh” as an Associate somewhere else
2) Leave in 2-3 years to try to lateral to Senior Associate/VP
Personally, I’d pick (1) since you already know you don’t fit well.
OP, I think it will depnd on few factors. What type of a city (tier 1, 2 , etc.) city? Are you in LMM, MM, etc? Is it a flat org or are there many levels that you can climb?
