How long in consulting before moving to PE?
I'm currently working for a non-MBB top five consulting shop, and I'm looking to move into PE. How long do consultants typically work before making the transition? Is recruiting at my 18-month mark too soon? Will my odds be better if I put in two full years?
I'm at 18, working well for me, when I tried at like 6m-1y it was a waste of my time and energy. Before couldn't get traction, now have had a couple final round strikeouts (but still could have converted w/ better performance)
Do you guys specialize in PE DD? assuming you work at OW, LEK, P-EY?
Can provide some perspective on this topic as I recruited from MBB to PE after ~1 year on the job. If you are looking to do on-cycle, then recruiting after 1 year is very normal. If you are looking to do off-cycle, 18 months into the job is also quite normal. You now see bankers recruiting ~4 months into the job for PE/HF, so if anything 18+ months is on the longer side of things.
Thanks for your perspective. In your experience, did most of the brand name funds give looks to consultants, or do they mostly target bankers?
I've likely answered most of your questions on my AMA or PE recruitment walkthrough. Would recommend taking a read.
If you have any additional questions, feel free to PM me!
I want to add to this for anyone who's not at an MBB. It will be tough to get going with on-cycle recruiting. Despite having great grades, DD & growth strategy experience, blue chip school, knowing modeling, talking to HHs, I did not get picked up on-cycle.
It really do be like that sometimes / that's just showbiz, baby
