How many Facebook Friends?

How many facebook friends do you feel is the "minimum" number in order to not appear anti social? I'm a college student and I only speak to say 15-20 people at all and they are my close friends in real life. I never speak to kids from my high school and I don't go out of my way to be social as I already have a pretty "set" life with a best friend, girl friend, etc.

My question is, would it be weird to have less than 50 facebook friends as a college student in this day and age?

Secondly, do you judge people based on the quality of someone's pictures and the quality of posts on their wall or do you also take into account number of facebook friends?

at least 1000 seems pretty common nowadays.

honestly - it doesnt really matter at all. if you want to, you can hide your friends list to everyone except yourself tho. that way no one will know wheter you have 2 friends or 2000.

Also, how did you delude yourself into thinking this belonged in the investment banking portion of the forum?

getting a community manager intern (boreed) set up to fix these - move posts that shouldnt be in the ib forum to the monkeying around forum etc

It's fine to have 50 or less. I know people with 2000+ friends and they only interact with a small percentage of their friends. Sometimes people add each other after meeting each other once, so rather than being actual friends they just know who the other person is.

If you have 50 close friends and that's all the people on your list, you are definitely not antisocial. Chances are you are more selective and know more people but haven't added them to your list.

for normal, extrovert people 500 seems to be "normal". If you have a job facing the public ie club promoter, student body, member of professional body/network, (...) you will easily have 1,500+ people you know in person.

Also, some people "split" their contacts into various profiles, ie a professional profile and a personal one.

LMFAO. WOW.

anyhow i had about 350 going into college, had 1000+ after college, and in 2 days, I actually went through and deleted 800 friends that I had only met once or never saw again after freshman/soph. year and just felt creepy so right before I began my full time job, I had about 230 friends left on FB. And even then, about 50 I actually give a shit about, about 50 who gives a shit back about me, about 8 i regularly post/tag to, and about 3 i regularly chat/send messages to, one of them being my girlfriend.

and i'm a pretty cool, popular, friendly, outgoing, smart, ambitious, good lookin guy.

so to answer your question, the lesser fb friends you have, the cooler, more popular, friendlier, more out going, smarter, more ambitious, and better looking you are.

TRUE STORY: The prospect asked me, "What's it like to work at ****?" I asked him, "You ever been to Home Depot?" "Yes" "Well, it's like that. It's full of fucking tools." And he stared, innocently wide-eyed and nodded with deep understanding

Also, most of my female friends who were in sororities and who (relatively) are pretty attractive, have reduced their FBs either by 300-500 friends affter graduation, or blocked all their pics, or stopped using FB altogether.

there's this one girl who was very active back in college, had a ton of friends, was VP of her sorority, who works in IB, and is quite hot who's last post on FB is dated October 19, 2011. that's right. 2011. it's now july 6, 2012.

still talk to her sometimes to catch up and shes like "yeah fuck fb. who has time for that shit. its creepy"

Back when I used to own a Facebook account, I had around a hundred something friends, mostly which were people who I went to high school with. I've seen what Facebook has turned into nowadays, and i'm amazed that it doesn't have any solid competitors.

Some people might argue that there are many reasons why to delete your Facebook account -- excluding the fact that I didn't really want to join the Facebook train initially, I quit because I couldn't adopt the lifestyle of tagging myself, checking in, and basically trying to share my life to people with pictures which I think Facebook is all about.

1,000+

Know almost each and every one of them though (classmates, juniors, seniors). Not that close that I would chat them up casually though. Never really check my account too since 2 years ago.

Fortes fortuna adiuvat.

I deactivated my account about 2 1/2 months ago and couldn't be happier about it--I was a slave to that thing. At the time of deletion I had 310 Facebook friends. I've probably deleted 120 or so and probably 120 or so have deleted me. I knew basically all 310 people. Linkedin is my preferred social network. Currently, it's pretty clean and moderately utilized. Because the site is a public place for professionals, there is a lot less political stuff, and when there is political stuff people temper their words lest they are branded by their network as that nut job.

Isn't there a rule that states that while people have varying numbers of contacts that the vast majority of people have approximately the same number of close friendships? I think that number is around 10 people or so.
