How many hours you sleep in a day?
I'm curious - how much sleep do you usually get during the week?
Typical time you get to bed / wake up in the morning?
Do you nap at work?
Thanks.

This is probably weak sauce for finance, but I'm a 7-8 hour guy and I don't really care what anyone else thinks. I can do 4-6 for periods of time but quality of life drops too much and it is not worth it for me. I think the average in finance is closer to 6. A solid 10-12 hour work effort is enough for one day (anything beyond that results in diminishing marginal returns on productivity IMO), which leaves me enough time to get other things done and still get a decent amount of sleep.
6-7
I feel like crap if I don't get my 8-9 hours. Sometimes I'll even sleep 10 if I sleep 8 the day before. Now before everyone calls me a pussy, realize that I rarely get 8-9 hours of sleep. I've just noticed though that even if I get 6-7, my eyes feel dry, it feels awful to blink, and life in general is just shittier than when I get 8-9. It's a rare day when I actually get good sleep but when I do, I feel much better. Anything less than 7 hours and I really can't do it for more than a few days. So either I'll be getting used to feeling like shit all the time, or I'll make an effort to literally just pass out during the week after work (I'm working in DCM so hours aren't quite as bad).
Wow, you sound pathetic.
Pathetic? The guy is spot on. Are you one of the cool kids whose parents let him stay up until 11 to watch TV?
Spot on mate "bulge_bracket", I need my 8-9 hours otherwise am grumpy, and my colleagues just leave me alone. I usually get only a couple hours on Thursday due to client dinners, but it's pretty easy to cruise through Friday as it's usually a slow day. I feel like shit the rest of the week if I have to go out on Tuesday and Wednesday thought. I used to entertain much more when I first started, and was running on low sleep my first two years. Now I value my sleep, and would much rather go play some tennis with my clients over the week end, then go out at night.
That said: it all varies - i work with clients so that's where I can get sleep deprived. Had an old flatmate in M&A he used to sometimes not come home and not get any sleep for 2-3 days. Another flatmate used to work in structuring, he would finish at midnight.
I start damn early around 6:30 - 7:00; but by 17:00 am outta here boy! (leaving now); if you do the math, I go to bed at 22:00 or earlier, and I am damn proud of it!
Haha you're a pussy. And you work in DCM.
I've been running on 5-7 hours of sleep ever since i was in high school and it is the same now. By the time I get out of the shower, I'm ready to get the day started.
this
right now since i'm not doing anything until I start b-school in the fall, I sleep 11-12 hours a night. during school or work I would usually get about 3-5 during the week and 6-8 on the weekends
College student, 3 hours. And no, I'm not just fucking around on the Internet; I'm actually swamped with work. Maybe once I start work I can squeeze in some more naps.
There's no way that you get 3 hours of per night in College; absolutely not. You either need to manage your time better or you're experiencing diminishing returns and need to just go and have some fun.
Plus he is just literally killing himself.
How are you possibly this swamped with work? Are you like a quadruple major who's also president of his fraternity who's also busy applying for jobs who's also captain of a sports team?
I used to sleep 4-hour nights during high school (when I ACTUALLY was fucking around on the Internet) so maybe it's a conditioning thing and it doesn't affect me as much now. I actually follow something similar to the Everyman 3-nap schedule (http://www.dustincurtis.com/sleep.html), which I started before knowing there was such a thing as polyphasic sleep. Guess it does work, somewhat?
This is an outright lie. Either that or you're absolutely terrible at studying. In college I wouldn't do any work for weeks at a time when I didn't have anything due and still ended up with around a 3.7. I've seen a few kids who were always in the dorm study room, even on friday or saturday nights, and it made me realize that they either have learning disabilities or they just don't do shit when they're in there. The idea that someone comes back from class, does homework until dinner, then studies/reads/does homework after dinner until bed time every single night of the week is just absurd. It usually ended up being kids who didn't know how to socialize and they'd read and reread every chapter of a textbook a month before the exam, which would piss me off because they may get an A on an exam they studied for weeks for, whereas I might get an A- on an exam I studied for four hours for. I will never understand this type of person. It's been said before - in college (unless you're on a varsity sports team), you have time for everything. It's just whether you want to make time. Countless times I got back from class, took a long nap, and did nothing for the rest of the night but hang out, and that was when I was in student senate, band, etc.
I try to get 6 every night, though i wasn't this lucky when I was in banking. I'm a night owl, so even if I get home late, I tend to stay up watching TV for a bit or what not. That said, I usually get 8 - 12 hours on Friday night into Saturday.
.
~6
counting the time i sleep at my desk?
~5 with lots of caffeine
I have come to the conclusion that when you are free and have enough time to sleep in, you obviously do but it doesn't make you feel more rested. 8-9h gives me marginally more energy than 6h per night.
my sleep cycle is currently 4 AM- 1PM, unemployed piece of shit FTW
Same here, and I'm finding it impossible to get out of the cycle.
lmao, glad u said that actually. ive tried everything to straighten it out. i've tried waking up early figuring at night id b so tired id fall asleep at a good time, but i still cant fall asleep earlier. Ive tried just outright going to bed earlier but of course I couldn't fall asleep then. And last but not least, a couple weeks ago I was about to go to bed at 4 AM and i came up with the idea that if I could make it to 10PM the next day, then I'd wake up at like 8AM the day after and be all set. Well I made it to 10 PM and then slept to 1 PM the next day anyway, lmao. I'm done trying
6-8 real estate finance. Not IB or PE.
When I was an SA last summer it was usually about 7. I was at an MM so the hours weren't terrible. Usually worked 9-11 or so, hung out and did whatever for a couple of hours, and then slept 1-8. It wasn't really that bad.

Teachers get 7 more minutes of sleep than financial analysts? Something's wrong here.
This is good. I was expecting the younger monkeys to be averaging even less.
6 hours, asleep by midnight and up at 6am.
^^What he said...I don't care what school you go to you do not need to work that many hours in college.
3-5
usually 6-7 during the week...i can sleep for 14 hours on the weekend if i choose to, but i try to limit it to 9-10 hours so i don't waste the whole day.
i don't understand anyone who brags about how little they sleep. i become a cranky piece of shit if i get less than 5 hours and lose notable brain function the next day if i only get a few hours.
I have to work mornings some days and had an internship this semester that had me up before 7. Miserable, sometimes a whole week with less than 6 hrs a night, and I'm in college. I love 10hr sleeps or long afternoon naps
I shoot for 6-8 most days. Depends on what I have to do the next day/how late I need to stay up.
Depends on the week.. usually 7 and 8-10 Fri/Sat. On busy weeks, I'm 4-5 - That's waking up, going to work, rushing home with just enough time for 4-6 more.
You'll sleep enough when you're dead.
In the meantime, work your butt off while you're still young and capable.
Yea, well those dead people are sleeping 24h a day to catch up all those working hours. So it will evetually even out.
Thanks so much for citing this poorly written article and shitty study.
You also forgot to mention that while the study says people who sleep less than 6 hours a night are 12% more likely to die prematurely, it also says that 30% of people who get OVER 9 hours of sleep a night are more likely to die prematurely.
Depends on the week, earliest I'll ever be in bed is one, if it's tough might be 6am every day. I live close to the office, so can get up at 9 to 9:30 and still be in by 10.
Got a sleep app on my phone and I average just under 8 including weekends. I'm just graduating and expect this will drop off once I start work fairly dramatically.
I think it depends how much I wanna screw around after work or if I go out
Screw around/going out= 4-6 hours Around 2am to 7am Don't screw around/go out=6-8hours Around 12am to 7am
i dont fuckin sleep
^^^
I try to shoot for the 8-hour sweet spot, generally. But I can be flexible.
I'm right around 8-9 if I can…less on weekends since I stay up later and still wake up around the same time.
Sometimes you have to fight through the 4-5 hrs (the random 1-2hr) but not the norm.
6-7 during week and 9-10 during weekends. Internship and a job keep me real busy.
4-6 on weekdays, 9-12 on weekends.
I get around 5 - 6 hours every night. I can never stay up all night. I have been able to get by off of 2 hours, but I pass out midday. I tend to be very irritable and just takes too much energy to do simple things. I need at least 3 to function properly haha. For some reason, that one hour makes a difference. If I sleep for more than 8 hours, I tend to feel sluggish and lazy the whole day.
I try to go to bed at midnight and wake up at 8:00am. Usually its more like 12:30am - 7:30am. Anything less and I'm usually pretty drained the next day. If I can secure eight hours I'm usually ultra productive.
When I worked in banking, usually went to sleep around 2:30am and woke up at 8am so 5.5 hours. Now work in corp dev and go to bed by 11pm and wake up at 8am.
6-8 hours during the week-asleep between 10:00 and 12:30 usually and get up at 5:30-6:00. If I'm out late for some reason it usually comes off the front end. I try to catch up on the weekends but I'm so conditioned to waking up early that unless I'm completely schnockered I'm still up by 8ish. Often I end up making up sleep time with a long (2 hoursish) nap one or both weekend days.
I have the same problem, even when I take a melatonin, a 2-4pm nap is so crucial on weekends
Like 7 hours. Sleep: 11pm - 6am. Not bad at all.
finishing up my undergrad...i sleep 10 or 11 hours unless I have class
8-9 on workdays
and 9-10 on weekdays...
say what you will, but things go down hill for me very quickly on 7 or fewer hours of sleep.
I'll take a good night's rest over most anything else.
during most live-deals ->c 4 average
When marketing -> c 6-8
6 - 8.
unless you're doing all nighters 2 -3 times a week, i don't see an excuse to sleep less than ~6 hours. I work 8 30 to 5 30, study 6 - 8 30 and 5 30 - 8, and i still get 7 hours to sleep.
i dont work all nighters and i dont sleep..ever
Sleep is for wimps!
PE co-investments + mezzanine at an institutional investor. Going for MBA this fall to hopefully transition to global macro. I have to say though I will miss the lifestyle here.
4-5 . I'm not in Investment banking IB though i'm in International baccalaureate IB a Pre-University program and trading the market (which is bloody messed up especially the past few days) while running my internet marketing biz . Too little time in one day IMO . If there was a way to shorten my sleeping hours while staying productive I would .
Oh and I take a 20 minute nap right after lunch to ensure I stay refreshed and productive all day .
Slow down and live a little Francis...
Slow down ? I can't man I'd feel like something is wrong and restless ! Live ? Ho boy are partayyy hard every Friday and Saturday night (clubbing , pubs , house partays ) which probably contributes to my lack of sleep but thanks for the advice though . Life is short IMO , no time to slow down , when you slow down your in your dying process .

4-6, even on the weekends. my body does not let me sleep for more than 6 hours straight anymore..
Past 2 weeks I've been sleeping at 5 AM waking up at 2 PM haha
2-3 hours.
Sleep more when I die.
which will likely happen much sooner than average if you keep that up
Anywhere from 5-7 hours on the weekdays and 6-8 in the weekends. I'm in trading so I don't work on weekends. Remember going in on a Sunday afternoon just to grab my cellphone charger. There were a few guys from M&A, ER and FX traders standing in the lobby getting ready for work. Man, that must suck.
4-6, but im in my prime if i get 7 hours a night
Sleep at 1-2 am. Up at 7-8.
Average about 5-7 hours. But deviates quite a bit.
About 6 a night. 10:30pm - 4:30am.
5-6 during week and 8 on weekends.
Right now, during the holidays, 12+ hours a day. It's fantastic but I think I'm getting depressed.
6-7. There's a lot of work to be done.
6-8hrs.
6 is roughly my minimum, 9 if I do some boozing the night before. I usually get 7, but lately have been sleeping like shit so running on an effective 5ish? It's brutal. Have been trying to adopt an 11p-5a sleep schedule incl. weekends, but holy eff that's hard to do.
At least 8 hours.
College kid, 5-6. I average 6-8 cups of coffee a day. Hit the gym early, play a ton of sports, work, class, do it all.
No naps, 5 hrs per night.
I constantly aim for 7 hrs... Frankly, anything more than that is not necessary and a personal need for more hrs is only based on habits and pure luxury imo
I have a 9-to-5 job now, thank god. Which means I can now sleep a solid 7 hours every night... without waking up every so often to check my phone for late-night slide revision requests.
You have no idea how happy this makes me.
Can go down to 6 due to work nowadays but I am aiming 7 or 8 aka don't need an alarm. It used to be much less and that totally destroys you.
I function super well on "little" sleep for some reason. Like, I'll wake up on my own half an hour before my alarm is even set to ring on 5 hours of sleep. I don't drink coffee either; it just makes me jittery. I have a lot of natural energy, I guess. It's pretty rad. It is hard to fall asleep sometimes though because I'm a night person and my energy levels grow linearly into the night.
Recent research study showed that less than 1% of the population can function properly on 5 hours of sleep. So the 60% of the working population that claims to sleep 5 hours = lies.
I try to avg. 7 hours.
6-7 hours, up at 530 most days, sometimes 5. Something for everyone to try here is to match your sleep with sleep cycles. So you know, a sleep cycle is the amount of time it takes to go from awake to slightly asleep to rem sleep to deep sleep back to rem then to slightly asleep. For most people myself included this takes about 90 minutes. If you can time your wake time so that you're waking up at the end of a sleep cycle (a multiple of 90 minutes), you'll wake more refreshed. For me, 6 hours feels better than 5 or even 7 sometimes, likewise 7.5 feels better than 8. Obviously everyone's sleep cycle varies and there's tons of variables like diet, alcohol consumption, heart health, caffeine intake, and so on, but give it a try.
Interesting, will do.
You can get phone apps that track motions during your sleep and that will only wake you up at the end of a cycle. Works quite well for me.
Also, synching your sleep with sunlight to some extent (not really possible come winter though) really helps for better, deeper sleep. This is because your cortisol (a stress hormone) levels are at minimum during midnight and highest between 6 and 8. We are sort of made for sleeping during those hours. I find aiming to sleep as early as one or two hours before midnight (and then raising at five or six) gets me the best quality.
How much sleep do you get as a banker? (Originally Posted: 10/31/2014)
Most of you have probably clicked on this thread wondering what I am trying to get at, but I am just curious. What do bankers get to average each night for sleep? Don't exaggerate anything, but don't downplay things either. I'm trying to get an idea of the banking lifestyle.
I'm posting this from the office - hope this answers your question.
I get ~5 hours a night M-F and more on weekends during a regular week. Some weeks much less sleep, very very rarely any more. However, I exercise before work which cuts my sleep down a bit - I know bankers who do no exercise (or very little) and get more.
Theoretically, if you work 9am - midnight M-T and live very close to work you could be asleep by 1 and awake by 8 so get 7 hours a night most weekdays - I know an intern who did this during my SA (during regular weeks, obviously not possible when super busy). However then your entire life is truly literally just work and sleep and it's a great way to get really out of shape really fast etc, so I would never recommend this to anyone
About three fiddy.
8 hours
not even in banking and I get about 6.
http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/the-hours
this thread gives a good representation. great quote by Marcus from this thread here:
Not working IB hours but I've been playing w/ my sleep to where the sweet spot is. There's a significant decrease in my mood when I get less than 6.5 - 7 hours of sleep, especially after a few days in a row. It sounds like as long as you live somewhat close to the office, 7 hours of sleep is doable. Assuming you get out of there between midnight to 1am.
If you're getting this from my post, I mentioned it's doable but I would never recommend it - no time for exercise, reading, watching tv or anything else you may want to do if you try to sleep 7 hours a night.
How much do you sleep? (Originally Posted: 01/21/2016)
Just curious how much do you guys sleep? For me: university student, 7 hours per day on average
I have never needed much sleep but I guess thats a good thing in finance. Normally as a high school student I get about 5-6 on weekdays and 8 on weekends.
Lately close to 8-9 hours but the GF is pissed I won't stay up. So going back to 6ish soon.
6-7 hours during the week, 8 - 9 on the weekend if my wife let's me sleep in. I'm cursed to be a late night person with an early morning wife (whose also leaves it to me to walk the dogs).
If I didn't have dogs, I could be getting out of bed at 8am every morning and getting into the office by 8.45.
5-6 is an average but try to hit 8-9 on the weekends.
Got to take care of your health =)
8-9 every night
Work is hard enough without a crap night's sleep
5-6 hours a day, then about 9-10 hours on the weekend.
I've been clocking about 7 solid hours during the week. I was always an advocate of sleeping less to get more work done, but it is much better to be energized during the day at the office. Of course, there are some nights where you simply don't have any say in the matter.
5-6 hours on weekdays.
I have a Jawbone Up and according to the sleep tracker on it I've slept an average of 5 hours and 28 minutes per night over the last week. That doesn't include time in bed though, just actual sleep. Been a pretty good week relatively speaking.
Huge difference between time spent in bed and getting meaningful rest. I'm in bed for 6-7 hours but probably clock 4-5 hours of real sleep. If there is a way to eliminate the bad sleep and still function on that 4-5, I am all ears
6-7 hours on weekdays, up to 12 on weekends (more if I'm hungover)
5-9 during the week, 5-9 during the weekend? I honestly don't pay much attention to it.
Usually 6 hours all days of the week. Sleeping in on weekends screw up my sleep schedule.

to be fair, 4-5 hours is actually not entirely due to work, I'm also preparing for CFA Level II, hence excluding that I will probably get 6-7 hours per night, hopefully that's a good sleeping hour...
Been in the business 3 years. I get 7 hours of sleep a night, sometimes less but usually make up for it another night.
Were you an Analyst? If so, how much did you get when you were an analyst?
Bad from a health standpoint that's for sure. But you probably already knew that.
Who cares, you're not going to die tomorrow if you're getting five hours of sleep, and if your performance/life isn't suffering, what's the difference...do you also want us to comment on your iron intake or toothbrushing routine?
To answer the question I probably get around 7 on average.
Tell that to her. http://offbeatchina.com/25-year-old-auditor-at-pwc-shanghai-worked-to-d…
relevant questions: are you working out/any physical work on a regular basis?
Go to bed between 11:45 - 1am. Wake up at 6:30 everyday.
6 hours approximately
Who needs sleep? They are too many goals to achieve and life is too short. I think sleep is a waste of time and if it were not for health reasons I would never ever sleep.
Would SB if I had one.
Amen brother
I get about 7 a night. Should be enough but I am NOT a morning person.
Next time someone asks me "what's my biggest weakness?"...
Are you guys able to sleep in on the weekends at least? Just curious
I make sure I get 50 hours a week I use an app called Sleep Cycle which records your duration and quality of sleep so by Sunday night I make sure I've hit that whether that means catching up on the weekend or not... ranges anywhere from 6-10 hours during the week.
This is also as a 1st yr analyst at a L/S fund
You're doing it wrong! This is not investment banking; you need to be able to think clearly to succeed, at least once you're being asked to make recommendations and do more than just churn analysis. The job requires 50-70 hours/week at most shops. If you're not sleeping at least 7-8 hours a night that's a choice you're making because of other priorities. That's fine if it works for you, but it's not really a consequence of the job.
I usually sleep at midnight and wake up at 7:15 so 7 hours? The days in which I get
