I too am curious how much the site makes, but whatever the amount it is well deserved by Nychimp. When I get a job I will look into donating money to the site, because I know that the things that I've learned here bring me closer to that goal every day.

i will share...nothing to hide.

since inception (May 2006), the site has made around $10k and is now running anywhere from $500-$1500 a month in revenue (depending on how many clicks on ads, traffic and google's mysterious algorithm that determines the payout rate -- I user Google AdSense). but the site ends up generating a whopping $0 in profit (approximately) depending on what I am doing that particular month.

between buying out my partner (he was too busy), investing in web development, paying for hosting (we are finally on our own dedicated box) and google adwords, etc., I am definitely in the red...but the site has really started growing nicely lately and i am planning on reinvesting almost all of the ad $ back into the site to make it the best experience possible. i really enjoy running the site even though it can be a lot of work for one guy with a full time job and a girlfriend -- i plan on running it and continue improving upon it any way I can. I want WallStreetOasis.com to become the most entertaining AND useful community for finance professionals out there and I won't rest until this becomes a reality.

i appreciate all of the input and constructive feedback you guys have given me. please keep the comments coming in the Site Suggestions forum. any help spreading the word to help the site grow and get more knowledgeable users on here would be much appreciated.

here are some things to look forward to (I've learned not to put a timeframe on these goals, but I promise we will get there):

  • Instant messaging / chat capability between users online

  • WallStreetOasis.com publication. In the next few months, I will be offering my certified users a chance to co-author a publication based on different areas of finance for people trying to get 1st hand accounts of what it is really like on the inside. I will be developing a framework / outline for each chapter and offering profit sharing to the authors of each chapter, (the rest of the proceeds will go back into the site and 10% to charity)

  • Improved FAQ section in the navigation bar for newbies (instead of in the right column where it is now)

  • Expanded link database for userful sites (this has already started, but I will also soon be installing a ranking system into the links so the most useful / popular sites float to the top)

  • Ranking of threads - I might also implement a ranking system for threads (each thread can be ranked 1-5 bananas -- and the highest ranked threads will be in a block somewhere)

  • improved layout / ease of use through better graphics / buttons, etc...including a better "news" section and "stock" section in the nav bar

  • launch of a video blog based on the sites discussions to be launched Summer of 2008

  • ability to upload and share images and videos

  • improve certification so that each star is specific to industry (ie, each star for certified users has small letters in it that indicate what the user is certified in)

...and much much more.

Stay tuned and thanks for the support!

ps - we are about to get our 10,000th registered monkey (most likely before the new year)...we get about 5,000 visits a day (including anonymous monkeys) and over a million page views a month

Definitely a great site. What I find interesting is the cycles it goes through as we progress through the various recruiting seasons. There is a big ramp up in the fall for full time recruiting, summer analyst questions start rolling in shortly after, and then there is the grace period. WSO probably has a better idea based on raw data, but there is definitely a pattern to it.

By the way, the upgrades sound fantastic. I would probably focus less on the functionality of the website and more on the content related additions. Publications, certifications, and improved FAQ over things such as IMs, videos, etc. Videos and images will probably put increased strain on your server as well as eat up space if archived indefinitely. Also, consider color coding certification stars as opposed to adding text. It will probably be simpler from a development standpoint and easier once the readers familiarize themselves with the colors. I'd imagine the majority of your visitor base are repeats as opposed to a heavy stream of one-time site browsers.

As per the above requests, it might be worthwhile to set up a paypal donation box for those looking to give a bit. Make sure it gets implemented right before July comes too.

Lastly, what you may consider doing is setting up an "advice" forum. I've seen many posts of users who are just simply looking to give advice to others. It would probably require a bit of moderation, but if you made it strictly for those offering advice and not a forum for asking for advice, it may be an interesting way of retaining the knowledge passed on from the main forums.

I think that is all I got. Congrats on a great job making the site what it is.
