How much to spend on a mattress as a first year?
How much should a first year spend on a mattress? Was looking at Casper and Purple however for whatever reason the prices of these have gone up almost 100% in the past year? If I were to purchase a mattress in NYC I would definitely intend on using it for 5+ years, however I'm not sure if it's worth blowing 1k on a mattress when there are other alternatives that possibly are just as good and half the price.
Get one from Ikea, you could get a solid one anywhere from $250-$500. Have had mine for three years and still sturdy.
Mattresses are such a crapshoot, in my experience. My best ever was a $500 overstock one I had in college. Paid $3,500 for my current one and it's okay but nowhere near great.

Spent ~700 when I first moved to the city on a bed in a box (leesa I think). Can't really say if it was worth it or not. It's not the best, but it's like a 7 and has held up very well.
I'd spend $1.5k at most and try to be at or below $1.0k. This is definitely enough to make sure you get a decent range of beds while also noting you'll do some gross shit, live in some gross places, and move every year while you're young.
Money never sleeps
Just started FT and spent 3k on a mattress.
I went to mattress firm, tried a ton of beds, and bought one that I love. They delivered for free and it was super easy.
Lot of my friends got cheaper ones for 500-1000 and don’t like them and plan to upgrade in a few months/year. At that point, it’s a waste and just start with the good one.
Buying mattresses online sucks unless you know exactly what you want because you can’t try. Moving mattresses also sucks. I’m sure I could find an equivalent mattress to mine online for half the price, but trying them out was worth it and I wanted delivery.
I spent ~1.7k on my bed (mattress + box spring). Definitely expensive but Mattresses are probably the only furniture item it makes 0% sense to cheap out on. You spend a quarter-third of your life on this thing, make sure its good for you.
I have Nectar mattress. No complaints. can get it shipped to you. Comes in a box.
I think I paid like $600 dollars a year and a half ago. I have no complaints and have actually received compliments on how soft my bed is from girls who have stayed the night. I have also heard that Brooklinen makes great sheets and am probably going to by a set with this rounds bonus money (~$450).
Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh
A good night sleep is always worth it. One of the few things I will spend more money on.
I bought Brooklinen hahaha, can't wait for them to come
You'll have to report back and let us know if you like them. Which ones did you get?
Haha funny this topic came up. I bought brooklinen sheets last night (their classic percale core set). They have a sale going right now for 4th of July, I think it ends tonight. 15% off
If you/your parents have a Costco membership can get a full size Casper for 550 and Queen for 600
Bought a purple mattress for sub 1k during memorial day sale, took a month to break in (no joke) turned me from a stomach sleeper into a back sleeper, sleeping on my stomach is unbearable on this thing since you sink in a bit (im only 150lb’s for reference) its very comfortable but not sure if it was worth it. Can’t really go wrong with shopping online as they have free delivery and 100 day return policy’s
I'm probably going to spend a few grand. I have slight back discomfort
Am also about to move to nyc for FT, and am looking at getting the Casper Nova hybrid. I think I saw a thread on here a while back that had a bunch of people advocating for Casper. The way I see it- you spend ~1/3 of your life on the mattress, so it's worth it
I got a purple hybrid mattress, best mattress I’ve ever slept on except one random hotel mattress in Germany. Worth the investment.
Spent $350 at IKEA, best mattress I’ve had my whole life
wow I'm so embarrassed I spent $60 on an amazon mattress, did not realize ppl actually spent $
Just moved to Manhattan and spending for decorating my studio apartment and other necessary expenses are coming out left and right. I ended up buying a cheap frame and a memory foam mattress for a twin bed at <$400 all in (free shipping via Amazon). Meanwhile I spent over $1500 to complete my new PS5 setup with a big UHD TV screen. A man’s gotta have his priorities ;)
Twin sized bed checks out
Maybe it's just me but the numbers being thrown around in this thread seem ridiculous... I spent 250 on a 10" Wayfair memory foam mattress when I came to the city for college four years ago, and it was the only piece of furniture I took with me when I moved to my new place - it's that comfortable. No signs of wear or damage anywhere on it after all this time.
Don’t think you have to pay for brand names, just do your research and read reviews
That’s probably because you haven’t slept on nice mattresses. I completely agree that you shouldn’t care about the brand name, and in many cases that is a large % of the price (and buying a mattress is about as fun as buying a used car…), but I’ve tried some mattresses that I would definitely pay up for. But coming out of college I was like many on this thread, and the cheapest memory foam felt like 10 steps up from what I had in college and HS (I got hand me down clothes and mattresses). As others have noted, good sleep is key, so don’t constrain your budget (if you can), and spend some time trying some out and reading reviews. Biggest thing is that it has to be comfortable for you (memory foam or not? Firmness level? Do you tend to get cold or hot when sleeping? Side or back sleeper? Etc). I think out of college I spent $400-500 (most I could afford) and then later on in life tried a whole bunch without looking at prices and ended up in something much more expensive.
Though you're incorrect about my having not slept on nice mattresses (parents were big on the "buy to last" mentality and bought a couple of nice $1k+ mattresses while I lived at home), I agree with your sentiments. My point was that quality largely outweighs brand names, and "nice" doesn't necessitate a higher price, especially when the cheaper mattress is more comfortable and holds up to extended use. I admittedly had an easier time buying a mattress because I'm a back sleeper with a need for firm support - in large part due to back pain cause by pricey mattresses cratering out over the years - so there's a lot of cheaper options. If OP has special sleeping needs as you mentioned, trying out mattresses in person and paying up for quality might be the more viable option.
Spent $450 on my mattress out of a box. I have been sleeping on the same one since literally 8th grade and just bought another one for NYC move in lol. I'll never buy another mattress until I have to upgrade to a queen/get married. (I have a full)
Imo you buy (and invest the most in) things that yield the highest ROI to you.
As an analyst, you’re still going to spend ~25% of every day for the next 2-5 years lying on this thing. To me: it’s absolutely worth splurging, but as others have said price does not equal value.
the bare minimum man you don't need something more than 100
