How much $tudent loans do you owe?
Starting next month I have to start paying off student loans, like many of us who graduated this year. I owe around $50k, Stafford sub and unsub, perkins and fucked up big time by taking out a Direct Plus Loan 7.9%.
60k yay.
Got a full ride and still ended up with about $12k at 6.25%. I've been paying off the minimum and still have about half of that to go.
I graduated with about ~$50K as well
$8.5K @ 6% Stafford sub. Being poor has its benefits. Gonna knock this out in my first 3-4 months of working before I start contributing to 401k (firm only begins 401k match 3 months in anyway).
I have about 15k left. graduated 4 years ago.
$0 - Got a full ride - went to a state school. In hindsight it worked out, but was impossibly hard to break in to IB, even then started at a boutique.
$0 - nice grandparents
$0 - nice parents
Had around 10k (scholarships covered the rest) but ended up paying that off as fast as I could after starting FT.
had 4k after scholarships and financial aid. paid it off at the six month mark because that's when they started charging interest.
Graduated with ~$60k, have paid that down to ~$15k in under 2 years...
Balance is at 11k right now. Started at 17k after graduation. I raped it pretty hard during the grace period and my life and finances are normalizing after the big move. Now I can contribute a good amount monthly (between $500 and $1000) and I'll be able to pay off the rest with my bonus at FY end.
I can't imagine how some of you 50K+ people feel. Being in debt is truly terrible. You feel like you don't own a single dollar you bring in, have limited flexibility in career decisions (currently hate my location but I'm staying b/c it's secure), and you don't even get to experience the rewards of working your ass off because every dollar earned goes towards your debt (if you spend it elsewhere, you feel guilty).
My kids will (a) have school 100% paid for by me or (b) go to state school.
Student debt sucks, but at least we all are (or most of us) working good jobs. Imagine coming out of UG with $100K in debt and making $35-40K. Friggin' blows.
It really does suck and I am making 40K :(. You had gotten a MSF from Villanova from my understanding that is not cheap, so you prob have a lot left or did it get cut in half because of the fellowship program Nova offers?
Had a free ride to state school. Got paid a stipend to go to college.
10k @ 3% graduating from a horrible college. paid for the rest by working full-time while going to school. paid off decently
Paid off already. Have some savings, probably for a new condo.
10K @ 6.8%
