How often do people ask about your first job out of college?
Just graduated from a target school, took some bad advice and ended up at a mediocre company. I’m in my early 20s so I don’t have a lot of life perspective yet. Do folks in the late 20s or older get asked about their first job out of college much? Like in social situations. Kinda embarrassed about it tbh
I think it makes for an even better story once you make it. Nothing to be ashamed about.
Its all anyone talks about (when you're in the position). After, not so much.
Look for another position - I hope you're already applying for places.
I started out at a real shit show. I had solid internships but... anyway moved on from the shit show asap. Got in good places afterwards, some people in industry who know the shit show still will point it out as an outlier in my background, most people dont know it because it was so bad.
Was your first role World Class at what they did or what?
Life is okay OP. It’ll make for an interesting comeback story. Yeah, it might feel bad in the moment. But long term just keep pushing forward and be aggressive at getting where you want to go.
Maybe you won’t be the “perfect” GS TMT -> KKR -> HBS -> BX profile. But as the line of one of my favorite movies goes, “At least I won’t be unoriginal.”
The older you get, the easier it is to gloss over it very quickly. "I graduated and worked for a" ... "boutique firm" / "in industry" / "as a practitioner" / "in accounting" / "in sales" / "local firm for a little while" etc.
It will still be focused on as part of your story should you go back and get your MBA, even if you upgraded between then. Afterward, not many people care.
