The first question in infosec is: who are you trying to hide from? Your setup will depend on the power and resources of the entity going after you.

Not hiding just keeping my data personal and companies cannot profit of my personal data, without even telling or paying me.

I don't see any problem with using a VPN for personal purposes. Personally, I use several VPNs in order to find the necessary information on the sites that are banned in my country. They are legal, but in my country, it is always a mess. That's why I have to look for this: Torrents like this help me a lot, so now I don't have any trouble finding exciting content that I really like.
I think you need to take a fictional risk and try using a VPN.

Giffgaff didn't change anything in their URL. I think the problem is in your VPN. Unfortunately, I've never been in a similar situation, but I believe that there is definitely a way to find a solution. All I can say is that you should delete this VPN because it is bad. I can recommend the best VPN, which is NordVPN, but if you are willing to see a bigger list, then I would like to recommend this website since it has a list of the best Reddit's favorite VPNs. I personally found the VPN I'm using now on this website. I think that you will be able to find a replacement there since the list is really extensive.

NordVPN has been hacked before, so I wouldn't go on to call it the best VPN anymore. ExpressVPN is more secure in my opinion.

On a poker forum 2 + 2, there was this dude playing 'stars (Poker Stars) and had $350K confiscated because he was VPNing out of the US, which is illegal.

An interesting video about the most popular VPN: is it secure?

Depends on which one you use. Protonmail one is really good.

It depends on your threat model. For the majority of people like those who use every day, worrying about DNS leaks is beyond silly. Your Facebook account, Google Chrome installation, GMail, Windows 10, etc. already feed enormous amounts of data to Big Tech
