How to articulate this to head hunters?

Some background info: I am a first year in SF and looking to move back to Chicago for family reasons. I know the PE scene in Chicago isn't extremely big, so I'm also open to other roles such as private credit. How should I articulate this to head hunters?

I have heard that you need to know exactly want you want to do otherwise it's a bad impression to recruiters (you can't say you are open to both PE and HF). In my situation, should I pick one or the other (PE vs DL) or would it be acceptable to say that I am open to both but focusing exclusively on Chicago?
