Muffing dudes is the greatest form of shame you can bring on someone and solidifies whether or not you'll get to throw down...highly recommend it

What is scary is if you watch Bas, he throws the perfect punch. Straight line, hard fist, simply violent. I watched him on Warrior Tech or something on Discovery and his kicks and punched are devastating. The guy would destroy a normal person.

In that same vein, Anthony, how about Brock Lesnar getting his ass beat? Am I the only one that is simply terrified by the idea that there is someone out there that is capable of beating the shit out of that mammoth humor being. I'll be the first to admit that size isn't everything but still....

Armbars and elbow locks for self-defense are the stupidest thing you can imagine. The risk if you fail is high, and the upside is quite low. Arm extensions really only work if you are bigger or at least the same size as the opponent. For the untrained, they are also rather hard to execute properly, especially in a stressful situation.

A lot of the moves he shows need some space in order to get enough momentum to cause damage, thus making them rather useless for combat in cramped spaces - elevators, staircases, etc. They are kinda cool if you are choreographing a fight scene, a la West Side story.

This guy shows how to lay hurt on some dumb crackhead that was tweaked out enough to pick on a biker-looking dude with popeye forearms, not how to defend in a situation where you would actually need to - i.e. your attacker has a very high chance of kicking your ass and maybe even killing you and you have nowhere to run.

The only really good thing I've seen is the krav maga elbow strike. That is pure awesomeness for close combat, the gains are 1. momentum, 2. pressure on impact, due to elbow delivering same force over smaller area (compared to fist) 3. you won't shatter your elbow on someone's face 4. even if you are smaller in size and weaker, your elbows are bonier and sharper, so the impact can be as painful even with smaller force.

I also like palm strikes with fingers folded - IMO delivers more energy than a fist, risk of injury to the hand is much lower, and recovery is much faster

Headbutts are effective if you can get a clear shot at the nose, headbutt to the jaw is not painful enough to stun the opponent, and bone on bone hurts both. Besides, if the opponent is any good, he'd be able to dodge+headlock and choke you till you pass out, simultaneously punching you in the face while all you can do is stare at the ground and spit blood.

Kick to the nuts is effective if you can connect, but unless your attacker is tripping, he is going to protect his nuts. A kick to the knee cap would be just as effective, and the target will be less protected. Also I like a sweeping kick (or a regular kick or a punch, whatever) to the side of the thigh - if you deadleg right, your opponent is going to fold like the folded bologna he is :)

More is good, all is better

haha awesome detailed analysis my man! I hope you apply the same focus to your pitch books!

How the fuck do you know all this? Were you in the army?

US military training only teaches basic hand-to-hand combat for the majority of positions, and that training usually consists of self-defense with your weapon, creating enough space to put a bullet in your enemy. My guess is either he's been in his fair share of fights, does BJJ or Muay Thai.

PS- Krav is solid after you get a year under your belt of going 3-4 times a week. In that amount of time you pretty much learn how to temporarily incapacitate your attacker or create enough space to give you time to get the fuck outta there.

If you're an expert at a martial art you're going to have a leg up on most people walking down the street. If you took karate for a year in high school, not so much. Really all you have to know if you don't practice a martial art is to go for the weak spots: nuts, knees, eyes, throat, and nose.

Yea, Muay Thai is a great style. It definitely will toughen up those shins and forearms and god DAMN do they pack a punch. And they can take a beating haha

The best way to win is not to fight. Be dominant and convey the other you can beat him up or hurt him seriously and it is the same as if you beat him up.

Reminds me of good ol' Hegel and Koyeven arguments on the fight over death. Be ready to fight to death and give up enslaving yourself to anybody, and you life a poor (exhausting) but satisfying life!

How many of you have actually been in a real fight (not boxing or with friends)?

Before reading any of your stories, I'm going to guess about 5% of the following stories are true.

Yes. On the way home from the bars in college, three of us were walking home: me, a girl, and my roommate (who was a bartender at the bar we came from). Some kid was on his feet outside an apartment complex, seemingly swaying with the wind, about to pass out. The girl that was with me offered to walk him to his apartment. The kid looks up at her, takes a swing (and misses), and I attacked him. I don't remember it, but my roommate said I did well after he peeled me off.

Only been in one other fight, and that was at the same roommate's bar. It was packed, and the staff couldn't manage everything. Some random douche was arguing with my other roommate, and pointed a dart at his eye as if it were a bullseye. I came up from behind and put him in a choke hold, one of the bartenders told me to kick him out, so I literally dragged him out the back. When I let go at the bottom of the stairs, he attacked me, which was stupid because he was dizzy from being dragged the way he was. That was broken up quickly when bouncer from the front finally got there.

Oh, the Big Ten...

Yup, the way of Shao-Lin. Readiness for battle eliminates the need to battle.

I've been in a fight but I posted a video so I'm not sure if you not validating my 'stories' should offend me or not

In 6th grade I got in a fight and I won!

No, but seriously fighting sucks and can be scary as shit if you're in the middle of it. You can also get seriously hurt or do the same to someone else. A friend of mine got really lucky, he punched a guy in the face in a bar fight, the guy tripped and broke his neck falling down a massive flight of 3 whole stairs. If there hadn't been video of the other guy swinging at him multiple times before my friend tried to defend himself he could have gone to jail for a long fuckin time.

Try and defuse any situation you get into, buy a guy a drink if you have to and he's not being a complete prick. Nights in jail suck, even if you dont have to pay anything or get charged with anything. The whole "I'm going to prove I'm a man" by starting shit or contributing to the escalation of something really just shows you're insecure and in need of a new pair of testicles that are larger then the M&Ms you're packing. Not BSD material.

Shut the fuck up you little pussy. I wish I knew who you were so I could kick your ass.

Just joking- I totally agree with you. I've never been in anything more than in a slight shoving match with a drunk at a bar. and that was even scary for me. After seeing that video, it's insane to think that someone might want to break your leg if you insult his wife.

Anthony, would you mind sharing a couple of your brawl stories?

Anthony .:
Yeah, I have been in about a dozen brawls and as you get older it just isn't worth the hassle. Real easy to pick up an assault charge and no one is going to hire you. Apologize and move on.

Yeah I can't believe no one had mentioned this yet. The worst part about fighting by far is the charges and legal issues it brings.

Also, if anyone on the board has never been in a fight of any kind, I recommend you get into one before you check out. The rush from your fight or flight instinct is like nothing else you will experience.

Granted I'm not from the Ivy league jet set but I mean, yes to a degree. I don't necessarily mean fight in the sense of knockdown, drag out brawl but I would think a physical altercation is just part of growing up. I could very well be wrong but that was my perception...learn something new everyday I guess
