How to expedite the process

I’m currently still looking for a 2020SA position and may have a lead at a bank. I was wondering how I can expedite this process. I don’t currently have an offer elsewhere so cannot mention that. What can I say to HR/my contact at the bank to move the process along? I’ve been going through this process for like 8 months now still with no offer so I’d really like to get something and continue on with my life.

It isn’t clear from your post, but I’m guessing you have been interviewing for 8 months with a bunch of places and not going back and forth with your one contact for 8 months, right? How long have you been talking with your contact? Is it a BB/EB?

I don’t really know what you are looking for, and your post comes off a bit entitled (to me at least). Think about it from his/her perspective:

1) You have been looking for an internship for a while and haven’t secured any. This is a flag, other people are getting offers, so while part of this is luck, if I were the contact I would be concerned (and look closely at your resume, have a chat with you to make sure you can handle the interview, etc). You are asking someone to refer you (and go to bat for you) when you haven’t impressed others.

2) you are already asking this person for a job (a big favor)

3) on top of this you want them to move the process along so that it doesn’t inconvenience your life. As you say in your post you have no good reason to expedite this other than for your convenience, you are going to need to handle a lot more than this in the “real” word.

Anyway, you might take the above as harsh but you really don’t have a good way of moving this along. If you have been talking to this person for a while and know them well the most I would do is ping them and ask them where things stand as you are applying/prepping for other interviews and rather work for them (or something along those lines).

Hey there theATL, this may have come about the wrong way. I am definitely not entitled.

I go to a school with not many alumni and I've been focusing at BB/EBs. I have the resume for IB (previous experience, good grades and ecs). Multiple people i've spoken with from BB/EBs have referred my CV to HR but this has been a bit of false hope as I haven't heard from anyone yet. I had a screen with one bank and my contact there (who I've known for about 1-2 months) said I would progress in the process but i'm still yet to hear. I don't want them to forget about me. Is there a way I can move this along?

Sorry if this came off as being arrogant/entitled. Really didn't mean for it, just wanted some advice from people with experience in recruiting.

When did you have this screen with the bank? If only 1-2 weeks I would wait, if longer than that then you can reach out to your contact. If your contact emailed you (saying you’ll likely progress, etc) then rely to that, thank them and ask them if they have any info on timing. But don’t push too much, again they are doing you a huge favor.

I don’t want this to be discouraging but a couple additional things to note (keep in mind this is from the perspective of US universities/process, can be different if you are at school somewhere else)

1) about your resume: so many people have the high gpa, good EC, etc. And then on top of that you are competing against students that go to schools with strong connections to these banks. As I’ve said in other posts you just need to realize that it will be harder for you to break in and realize you’ll probably need more than just good grades

2) contacts/networking: not sure what level employees you are connecting with, but it sounds like some are just being polite in telling you they are pushing your resume along. There is a difference between just taking your resume and throwing it in a pile (essentially “applying” to the bank for you) and reaching out to the recruiter and referring you. At most places (again just giving what I know) a senior employee referral will get you an interview, but they need to ask for it and they probably are just putting your resume in a pile.

Getting top jobs out of college isn’t a guarantee, and it takes a lot of work. I’m not sure what your overall approach has been but filling out applications and reaching out to a few people generally won’t cut it. If you are at a semi target or non target you’ll need to put in a lot of effort (and you’ll get a lot of rejection and non responses along the way).
