google the funds that people talk about on here, a few of them have postings for summer analysts
I’ve seen some LinkedIn posts for winter interns for HFs.
Can also reach out and network to alums or just cold email/LinkedIn people? 95pc failure rate but costs nothing to try.
I'm going to guess 95% begin with asking Daddy for help. Obviously daddy works in the industry and/or is rich.
.
One I’m going to ran a formal process, submit a case study thing then a few rounds of interviews.
This was for soph summer, just submitted app online*
I landed a role at a fund one summer. Assuming you're not some Greenwich spawn, you'll be playing a numbers game of cold emailing as many funds as you can.Occasionally, someone will post a Bloomberg list of all of the registered funds in a geography. Start by trying to find those. If you can't, LinkedIn and combing through 13Fs / SEC text search by city keywords also work.
Shoot a three sentence email introducing yourself, describing your interest / how you found them, and asking if they'll bring someone onboard for the summer / season. Email the most senior person there since they'll likely be the one who makes the decision.
Finding these roles is hard but far from impossible. I've found that a small but significant amount of funds have had kids of big investors/friends come on board for the summer so they're used to taking people on.Best of luck, my friend. I'm certainly pulling for you.
Thanks, I really appreciate the info. I've compiled a long list of places to reach out to. I was wondering how you go about getting emails for most of these places? Most have one main email but how do you find emails for senior people working at these funds?
Just a lot of guessing and checking. There are some websites that allow you to test the email to make sure it's real before you send.
Spam literally every hedge fund. Send them physical mail. Emails. stalk them. LinkedIn message them. I wish I did more of this. Just expect a 1% response rate or less.
hedge funds are an old hat tho. I would focus on opportunities that will set you up to work in elite prop.
Why elite prop?
