Other thing that a lot of people in top positions share in common is juice.
You get in by not being creepy or awkward. Dressing well is also half the battle.
Here's assuming you can drop in socially without being invited by a member (e.g. frats that rush).
Lay the groundwork first. Make as many friends as possible the moment you set foot on the university and make sure to connect with anyone else from your school who is also there.
When you go to rush, make sure you are extremely well groomed and dressed (NOT as in most expensive or formal, but best put together). Get in touch with those friends you made during orientation/etc and get several of your most attractive female friends with you when you visit the fraternity in question.
There's a lot of reasons why this works both obvious and not so obvious that I shouldn't need to go into. This isn't just about guys wanting to get with them, it has more to do with the message that this sends about what kind of guy you are. Do NOT think that this is just a college thing. Some top rainmakers keep a steady supply of models at their Hamptons parties for a reason: it creates a revolving door of good business contacts who are coming because they want to meet the models, and up and coming models who want to meet the rich men who attend.
what has life come to. i'm not sure whether i should be impressed or feel sorry for people involved in such a cycle.
Been that way for awhile. Why do think every Hollywood producer has frequent parties that are well attended by graciously endowed models?

I doubt anyone in my undergrad would ever guess who this was if they knew it someone from their school and just had the posts to work off of.
Well most of those people that got into those clubs are likeable people. If you don't fit in, those clubs will never take you in. Just be yourself, and if people like you and you're a good/cool person you'll make it. But if you're some fucking book nerd that has no life outside of academics, and never played sports you'll never get into good fraternities. Academic fraternities are pretty easy to get into if you have great grades so that would work out for you. Secret societies are a bit more difficult to get into as you have to be invited, so basically if you have no family members in them you're fucked. I.e. my family has been Scottish right forever, so I could roll up one day and be considered for candidacy.
Do you mean Phi Beta Kappa? That's an academic honor society, not a social club. You get admission for graduating with a certain GPA.
I don't know much about Finals Clubs or Skull and Bones or running the world, but if you want to drink a lot of booze, have a ton of sex, make some good friends, and generally have a lot of fun...and then have that somehow be actually respected in the business world when you're looking for a job, this is how you get through rush:
Be cool. Don't try to be cool. Don't act cool. Be a normal, fun, intelligent person who others want to be around. Don't annoy people at rush or stand out in any negative way.
Fit in. Wear similar clothes, have similar haircuts, have similar interests. This pisses GDIs off and makes everyone scream stereotype, but what you're really doing in rush is finding a group of friends. Friends typically look alike, like the same things, etc. If you don't like the same things to the fraternity you are rushing, go rush a different one. Do not fake it.
That's it.
If you seem like you'll fit in and don't do anything stupid at rush events, you'll get a bid. Rushing is little more than one big, extended fit interview. Drink some beer, hook up with some girls, and make some friends over a two-week period and then if you're capable at it, do the same for the next 4-5 years.
