How to handle recruiter calls?
Hi guys - I'm at a position I'm happy with but recently got a recruiter call from a bank I'd consider similar in caliber. I feel odd shutting any opportunity down without learning about it first, but I also don't want to risk words getting around that I'm looking. Any suggestions on how to handle these recruiter calls?
Thanks!
Thank them for reaching out, tell them you are happy in your role (firm, responsibility, management, etc), and tell them you are happy to chat to understand the opportunity but that you aren’t actively recruiting or really considering leaving. Then you can learn about the job, comp, etc and decide if you think it is something worth pursuing. Most of the best candidates aren’t actively searching, so recruiters will understand this (and most likely will follow up and try to sell you on the role), and any recruiter worth anything will make sure it doesn’t get back to your firm. Even if it does, you can be pretty clear about how you approached it.
Thanks a ton!
