How to improve earnings memo for interview
Hi everyone,
I'm trying to practice writing earnings memo under an hour for future interviews and am looking for tips on how to structure the memo and how to dissect a press release. I've read few earnings memos by analysts (have access to research reports) and found the format to be quite different across analysts/banks - some like to focus on reiterating financial results vs. consensus, while others like to identify 3 key themes and write more about their opinion. To those who work in the field, is there a rough structure you like to follow (i.e. introductory summary and 3 key themes), and what are things you like to see from interviewees.
Additionally, any tips on dissecting the PR and MD&As effectively would be highly appreciated. I found there's a lot of information scattered across the pages, and given the short-nature of earnings memos, I was wondering if there are strategies on how to separate the important items from the rest. For example, am I better off focusing on talking about key metrics (i.e. revenue/EBITDA/sector-specific performance metrics) and integrate commentary from other line items (i.e. pulling explanations from opex and gross profit when talking about EBITDA).
Any tips would be appreciated!
