How to introduce myself using email

One of the managing directors at a boutique investment bank graduated from my university. I have his contact info and want to send an introductory email. What should I say in the email besides briefly introducing myself. Should I add him on linkedin or call him or wait until he responds to my email. Thanks.

nah don't add him on linked in until you have spoken with him a few times. if you want to include a link to your LinkedIn profile, put it in your email signature. its a little more subtle than just including it in the body of your email

looking for that pick-me-up to power through an all-nighter?

Thanks LIBOR. I just want to phrase my email correctly so I wouldn't come off like a dumbass. I was thinking of saying in the email to tell me about his experiences and if it were possible to discuss his firm in a bit more detail. I'm not sure if I should ask to meet him for an informational interview or to ask to talk on the phone first. Thanks.

Here is my suggestion and what I have done in the past. It might be a little different for you if you found his contact information on the firm's website...

Subject: Hello

Dear Mr. X,

My name is X I am a current undergraduate (recent graduate) of Y. I would first like to thank you for choosing to be an alumni contact at my University's alumni network. I have interned at X and Y and am extremely interested into breaking into your industry. I was hoping you would be willing to take a moment out of your busy schedule to have a brief phone conversation with me as I have a few questions. Thank you for your time.

-You

No matter what, it's going to be a little awkward.
