How to network with an Alumni at Work?

After working in a BO role for 9+ months I finally realized that there is an ER department at the company that I work at. After doing some research I found out that one of their members did his MBA at my non target undergrad school. So, I am thinking of the best way to send an email to somehow get a spark going.

Their team is very small(under 10) and made up of mostly older people (35+), and the lowest rank on their website is a Sr. Analyst so I am not sure if they hire junior members. They actually posted very recently that they are looking for a Sr. Analyst but nothing close to an entry level. I was thinking of sending the alumni an email with an ER report and ask if he can give me some tips on my work and how to break in. Would it be too much to ask if they are hiring at my level or even ask him to lunch? I am still working on writing my first ER report and taking the CFA in december, so I am concerned whether it is too early to contact. This is the closest shot to a networking opportunity that I have, so I want to play it strategically. Any additional advice would be helpful.

Email him briefly explaining what your intentions are and that you will be taking the CFA soon. Ask him out for lunch and then ask him for tips as to how to prepare for a career in ER - if it's going well I'd mention you've been working on an ER report on your own.

Take into account that with MiFid II coming in 2018, there will be great changes to ER, so maybe don't try to get into it right now and spend your time studying for the CFA and learning more about the division.
